Style Name: Cable Modem Only Verified Purchase
After weeks of back and forth, Comcast/Xfinity told me this modem is no longer supported on their network. Even though it meets all of the requirements, they claim there's something special about their network that this modem just doesn't like. I couldn't get a clear answer on what exactly. Purchase at your own risk. UPDATE: I got a clear answer from an actual network person; This modem does not offer 16 channels, and Comcast does not offer the full DOCSIS 3.0 spec speed per channel; this modem is limited to about 60mbps. You need to buy an expensive 16 up 4 down (aka 16x4) modem to get anything above those speeds, even with a modem that says it can do better.

Style Name: Cable Modem Only
Disclosure:
I received this free as part of a Netgear test and review program. I already own a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, so this review is an unbiased comparison between the two. The $69.99 price point of the Netgear makes it an attractive option to remove your monthly cable modem rental generally around $7 a month.

Packaging:
- Simple brown box with internal tray holding the device and accessories.

Accessories:
- Feet to stand it vertically
- Power cube and cords
- Shielded ethernet cable
- Manuals

Features:
Size: About the size of a modern smartphone, but a bit thicker
Visual: It has a nice simple look to it and is stylish
Position: Can lay horizontal or stand vertical
Ports:
- Coaxial cable jack
- Power port
- Ethernet port

Setup:
Setting up the device was very simple. You plug it in, wait for a bit and then via a browser go through the activation with Comcast/Xfinity. If you aren’t on Comcast/Xfinity you may need to contact your provider to complete the setup, but no one enjoys calling and waiting on hold with Comcast so not having to talk to them was a big plus. The manual provided by Netgear also outlined these details which was a plus and boost in confidence.

Performance:
The performance was on par with the existing DOCSIS 3.0 modem I already had. I had no issue replicating the same performance which was roughly 80mbs when downloading and roughly 6mbs uploading. Keep in mind that your performance is dependant on your plan, cable provider, network traffic, etc. I ran tests with my current DOCSIS 3.0 modem and the Netgear and they performed identical. With that in mind the price point of the Netgear is attractive.

I had to purchase this twice. The first one I got kept restarting. I called Time Warner Cable who told me that my signal was fine and that it must be the unit. I spent two house on the phone with them as they update the firmware and tested the signal. It was a pain. I returned the one and ordered another. The second one worked perfectly. I get 100mps, exactly what I am paying for from Time Warner, when I plug the ethernet cable into my router with this modem. If I hadn't gotten a bad unit the first time around, I would give this 5 stars.

This is a great replacement for a leased modem or just as an upgrade. This modem is significantly smaller than other modems on the market and mirrors the styling of some of the other Netgear networking products. I nice plus is that this modem comes with a stand to put the modem in a vertical position, saving even more space. As a modem, it appears to perform fine, providing speeds up to 340Mbs. My experience has been that most modems perform similarly, so the fact that this modem is smaller, lighter and costs less than the competition is a huge plus for a modem. Finally, my modem was shipped in "Frustration Free" packaging, and was just a simple brown box, with no extra security type packaging or marketing material.

I received this for free as part of the Netgear Friends and Family program.

Unlike most of the other reviewers here, I did not receive this item for free through Netgear's Friends and Family Program. Put simply. It didn't work with Comcast for me. Not sure if it was just a bad unit or what, but it was consistently dropping connection with comcast every few minutes. It would connect, then go through it's boot up cycle after a few minutes. Self-activation didn't work for about the first hour. I spent 2 hours on the phone with comcast tech support which didn't help at all. Also, during the rare occasions that I could get it to stay connected for any period of time, it wouldn't work with my Netgear router and would only work when hardwired directly to the modem. After 4 hours of troubleshooting (and I consider myself fairly tech savvy), I returned it and bought the Motorola 6121 which self-activated within 5 minutes and has been working flawlessly for the past two weeks.

I decided to stop paying to lease the modem from my provider(Comcast). I started browsing Amazon for a decent modem and found this Gem for under $40 at the time and decided to give it a shot.

It did not disappoint, super easy set up and install and now I'm getting better connection speeds then I did with the $200 modem/router combo I was lessening for $10 a month before.

I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to save over $100 a year!
