****Updated December 2015****

I am upgrading Grimes "Art Angels" CD to 5-stars - the Mp3 version still deserves 4 stars IMO. This is probably the first time I've bought an Mp3 AND CD album (couldn't help it - I just couldn't wait!). Yet the CD-Version has proven to be WAY better than the Amazon Mp3. While it is still heavily compressed, it does not clip horribly like the Mp3's did. The worst track, "Flesh Without Blood" came up clean (see attached image). In addition, the original release of "Realiti" is on the CD, which is one of my favorite Grimes tracks. So, not only does the CD sound better, I've got one more track to love.

I'll pretend that Claire AKA Grimes heard my plea for good fidelity and tweaked the CD release just in time. Thanks!

I am now wondering if Amazon, when ripping Mp3s applies additional compression that is NOT needed in this day and age. Maybe this was a freak accident. Lesson learned - even though there are plenty of clipped CDs out there, I'll avoid buying Mp3s in the future.

***Old Review****

Compared to her other work, this new album is way more accessible through and through, despite the fact that I agree with one review site's assessment that this album is like listening to the radio-every track seems very different from the last. It makes the album a bit of a wanderfest - like Grimes couldn't decide on a direction for the sound to go. Or perhaps she was ready to show off her apparently vast range.

The thread that holds this thing together seems to come from the lyrical side. Grimes seems more confident in her voice and lyrics than before, bringing them front and center.

a spectacular, rich, colorful, bright, buoyant pop album with loads of texture and thoughtful detail. grimes has outdone her last album, as could perhaps be expected based upon the promise of the previously released version of "realiti" (whose greatness she characteristically down-played, even denigrated).

as a big fan of many of the tracks from "visions," I was expecting a good album. But this album is better than visions. The occasional tendency of tracks on visions to sound like a pop sketch/experiment more than a structured pop song, has been replaced by a confidence and undeniable telent on Art Angels to weave exhilirating creative details into rigorously structured songs. Grimes clearly worked these songs over and the product is worth all of her careful work. i love to see such confidence, intelligence, and originality in full colors, as grimes has done with Art Angels.

Indie electro pop with just the right dose of weird. Poppier and slightly more accessible than Grimes' previous album, Visions, Art Angels is no less interesting, and eminently more danceable. It certainly feels more California than Montreal, seamlessly mixing New Wave, trap, dubstep, hip-hop, and event a touch of alt-country and metal. Claire Boucher reportedly mastered several new (to her) instruments in the run-up to recording this record, adding a few sonic elements absent from her earlier work- electronic flourishes and production mastery still stand out, though. Grimes also created the cover art. What can't this artist do? I was glad to see REALiTi on the track list. The album version sounds like a remix, slightly different than the original, which Grimes released as a free single a few months ago. It's still great, though, as are the rest of the full-length tracks on this album. Art Angels was definitely worth the three-year wait.

incredible. grimes thinks this is her best album yet...and i agree. great songs, great production. great grimes. yes, it's accessible...not a bad thing. lots of 80's influence (i like that). the artist has talked about her production, and it shines bright. love the guitars, drums. and the singing is wonderful.

have been a fan for a long time, and waited for this (ordered as soon as i woke, release day). it's been a long wait, but worth it.

small thing, but, (so far, at least), i prefer the 'realiti' demo that's been out for a while. the new version's good, but the demo kills it. everything else...loving it, and going for another listen in a bit. buy this!

In a perfect world this would be album of the year in a landslide. It defies categories. It's an exuberant mix of pop and electronic music. I love Visions and still listen to it regularly, but this album takes it up several notches. Give her the Grammy NOW!

Grimes. Embraces Pop. Then recreates Pop. And it's wonderful.

I'll admit I had to listen to Grime's latest release a number of times to wrap my head around her new direction. The compositions are stellar, catchy, and lots of fun. There's a lot to chew on here. It's great to hear her letting go and making music that speaks to the soul. Some of her tracks leave you wanting even more (the tunes are that good) - My advice? Put on your headphones and feel the aural nuances really come alive. It becomes evident after every spin that she's a very accomplished artist and it's clear she'll have even more to share down the road. For those that want Grimes to live in the past, well, you didn't expect her to stay well behaved and play by the rules now, did you? Thrilling. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
