As good as it gets!

Format: Audio CD

This new CD from Rokia's seems like a return to her roots, and is my favorite of hers yet! It has the same simple unassuming purity as her remarkable 1997 debut "Mouneissa" and '98 followup "Wanita", but now more refined and worldly. If anything Rokia's voice has matured into an ever deeper and more powerful elegance. If you know and love her music then there is no need to hesitate, if you don't you are in for a real treat (you can listen to the whole thing on Nonesuch's website, and her beautiful title track video "Ne So" can be seen on Youtube).

Her exquisitely intimate, emotive and husky voice, soothing yet lively songwriting and instrumentation are all just wonderful here. These songs are mostly in her native Malian tongue Bambara, but also there are a couple each in French and English, including a hauntingly sweet cover of "Strange Fruit." The musicianship and arrangements are also excellent throughout - with some especially lovely guitar and ngoni (traditional West African lute) playing as well as backing vocals. All in all this is an absolutely beautiful recording.
