This is very similarities to the Aerogarden 3SL which I own with the CFL(compact fluorescent light) bulb instead of the LED lighting. I have the 3SL in white which reflects light well and this in black which inhibits algae growth. The new Sprout LED does not heat up as much and uses less energy. the LED has a blue tone to its lighting and the CFL is more yellow. Hopefully you can see it in my photograph. Other changes is they improved the bubbler with more air holes and a different water/nutrient lid. They sound like a fish tank running. Set up only takes a few minutes, plants begin growing in a few days. I like the fact they are compact and I can move them around the house, they are currently in their third area of the house as I try to find them a ideal spot that I can add to and put up reflective material for the spilled lighting. I like the fact they require little care. I used a Rapitest light meter and found both to be about a 5 on the 1-10 scale. Almost a 6 right next to LED, so when the plant grow it will get more lighting. Stays on 16 hours a day but you can set when it starts up. Comes with starter pods and plant food with measuring cup. I really like these and am thinking of getting a larger one for vegetables. This kit comes with herbs dill, parsley and basil.
One last comment on the lighting, while it takes along time for LEDs to burn out, they are typically not replaceable, CFL lights are a removable and replaceable lighting source .

I had owned one of the original AeroGarden's roughly 10 years ago. I really loved the idea of it, but eventually got rid of it because it was extremely difficult to clean. That one had 6 pods, this one has 3. I will say that I'm very impressed with this newer model. First of all, it uses LED lights instead of expensive bulbs that had to be bought and replaced frequently with the old model. The light timer and reminder to add the liquid fertilizer is easy to set up by just holding down the timer button until the light turns on and off. I will say that the light is extremely bright, and as such illuminates most of my house in the evening (I have it in the kitchen). The light needs to stay on for 16 hours a day, so I have it set to be on from 5am till 9pm so that the light wont disturb my sleep at night. This model is also much easier to clean than previous versions. The tank fills with plant roots which become tangled up and invade every available space. Luckily this comes apart easily and not a problem to just dump the roots out when ready for the next plants.

I had no problem with the three included pods sprouting and growing nicely. What I like most about the Aerogarden is that you don't have to use their pods, you can use your own seeds with a little ingenuity. Just wash the plastic pod inserts and replace the sponge with ones you can buy on Amazon. Cut out paper circles and tape ontop. Insert your own seeds. Obviously some plants work better with the Aerogarden than others; you certainly wont be growing any root vegetables. There's lots of blogs that document other users successes growing plants. Using this message is also a great way to start seeds to then transfer to your garden in the spring.

As Meatloaf would say "Two out of three ain't bad" Three and half weeks in - the basil looks good, I think the dill will make it but no signs of life out of the parsley. This is a fun activity for a city dweller like me. The water bath that the seed pods sit in bubbles continually. The low energy light is lit for 18 hours/day. The light is movable so as the plants get bigger (fingers crossed) you can move it up to allow for a larger plant. I'll check back with you to let you know how these herbs go.

Part One - I'm doing this review in a few different parts, each being written about ten days apart. This portion will cover the setup and first few days of using the AeroGarden.

So far I'm enjoying this device! The set-up was quite simple, and took only about fifteen minutes total before I plugged everything in. The motor that's circulating the water is nice and quiet, and both the basil and dill are coming up nicely (especially the basil). No sign of the parsley yet, but for the other two, I've removed the domes already.

The only complaint that I have so far is that the light is basically like a miniature sun sitting on my kitchen counter. Now obviously, that's the point. But I'd like to think they could have set it up so that the light was a bit more focused.

Aside from that, I'm quite happy and very much enjoying this device! Look for the next update soon!

-------

Part two:

The basil is doing well, and the dill is growing amazingly fast. Also, finally, after many, many days, the parsley is beginning to come up! Took long enough. I've got the domes removed from the basil and dill, and I expect that soon, I'll have to raise up the light! Be prepared for part three, coming soon!

-----------

Part three:

It continues to grow. The basil and dill produce at insane levels, so if you like making your own pickles and/or Italian food, you're set. The parsley is rather weak and pitiful. Even after making sure it has plenty of light, the darn thing just doesn't want to grow very well. It did, however, produce enough parsley that I was able to add some to some meatballs I was making.

So it's been some time now, and I can safely say that I'm overall very pleased with this little setup.
