Well I don't often feel the need to write reviews but this product was so far below expectations it just might find itself going back to Amazon. I will say that there are some positive aspects of the pen but the negatives I've experienced with it in just 1 day far outweigh the pros.

So what's good about the pen? I'd say that it's probably around the 95% range for being able to convert my handwriting into digital. The few errors it's made are not a big deal BUT only if you are constantly checking on them in the feed. If you write several pages without checking them you'll have to essentially reread everything you just wrote to ensure it's converting correctly. Other positive was that it was very easy to set up and use and within about 10 minutes I was using the product.

So what's bad about the pen? Well as I mentioned earlier, it has "feeds" which essentially break down your writings into small sections. If you pause to long mid sentence and then pick back up a little bit later you'll find that your writings end up in 2 different feeds. Then you run into the issue of trying to move all of that data into an editable document like word is a nightmare. I was able to highlight the "feeds" that I wanted to move and easily email it to myself but it required almost as much time trying to reformat it that it probably would of been faster just to type it. So then there's the issue of the ink. By far the worst feature of this pen. My ink cartridge that came with the pen seemed to do ok, wasn't pleased with the quality of the ink but it was useable. About 5 pages into notes the cartridge ran out and so I popped in a replacement cartridge. I found that I was constantly being left trying to rewrite the same letter 10 times trying to get it to actually put ink on paper.

Live Scribe pen

When I first open the box and looked at the contents and realized how it worked, I wanted to give this 2 stars. Here is why:

-The pen is wide. Even if the grip were narrower that would help.
-The pen rattles. I hate when pens make noise. The ink cartridge is smaller than its housing.
-The pen needs special paper to transfer data to the device you’re using.

After the initial very negative impression. It grew on me.
-The size wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It’s more comfortable that I thought it would be (I would still prefer a narrower grip).
-It doesn’t rattle as much or have a lot of give when using (although I would prefer it didn’t at all).
-And most importantly the functionality of the pen is a lot better than I expected. This is the important part so I will dwell on this for a bit:

It uses special paper and I looked at the notebook prices. While not cheap, they are not expensive either.
The notebooks are numbered so it knows which notebook you are writing in automatically (or if writing in the included moleskine notebook).
It knows which page you are writing in and where on the page. So it makes an accurate representation of the page in the app.
I can write without being connected to the app, it stores stuff on the pen and syncs when connected to the app.

This is useful to me when I write stuff down and want access to the material when I don’t have the notebook but have the phone. All the stuff I jot down is accessible on try phone.

Things of note:
I wish I can turn off the beep it makes when I turn it on.
When you record audio: The pen doesn’t have a mic. It used the mic on my phone. So the pen is just a switch for the app to do the recording.

I've reviewed this pen as a long-time fan of Livescribe. I had a first generation Livescribe Pulse and then two Livescribe Echos, which were basically updated versions of the Pulse. I find the system is great for note-taking, brainstorming, and working through problems. Vastly better than using a laptop or tablet, and I loved the ability to toss my notepads when they were full, secure in the knowledge that the content had been digitized and was still available to me (and was even searchable, hugely useful to me). The ability to record audio and correlate it with the notes I was taking at the time was wonderful when I used it, but that wasn't very often. The Livescribe 3 Smartpen seems designed for people like me -- the pen's ability to record notes has been entirely removed and the user is left to record with a cell phone, which will then correlate the audio with notes being taken at the same time. This allows the pen to be smaller and more traditional looking while retaining all the capabilities I found most valuable. So why only four stars?

1. Whatever the appearance, it still feels like cheap plastic.
2. Your data goes on your phone or tablet. The mechanisms for moving this data to a desktop or laptop computer are weak. You can export individual page images, selected sets of pages, or "pencasts" that span multiple pages with a common audio recording. There is no way to export an entire notebook with a click, you have to manually select each page, which can be a chore with long notebooks, especially on a cellphone screen. Pencasts are saved in a PDF format that displays your writing but requires you either open this PDF in LiveScribe+ on your phone, or upload to a player on the Livescribe website in order to hear the audio.
