If you are a serious fan of Leon Russell, then you must have this documentary & you will love it! If not, it may not be so pleasing to you. Les Blank has captured some great, now priceless footage of Leon back in the early 70s during his prime, both on and offstage. The concert footage and the close-up shots of Leon make this film worthwhile to those of us who love Leon. Les Blank's bizarre film also contains a lot of what for me was a useless attempt to be artsy and make some kind of societal statement about all that was happening around Leon & his entourage. I could have done without all that & would have happily taken more Leon in its place! Nevertheless, I am grateful to finally, now have the opportunity to see this great footage. There is also wonderful footage of George Jones & Willie Nelson back in their early days. So, if you are a fan of Leon, don't miss it!

I think I've seen every rock documentary worth seeing, and this one is absolutely outstanding. Such an amazing time capsule and look at the amazing Leon Russell in his prime. You also get sort of a fascinating look at Oklahoma in the early 1970's. This is an outstanding movie that everyone should see. God bless Leon Russell!

A Lifer’s Guide to A Poem Is A Naked Person
Enough with the bashing of Les Blank. To be sure he joined the party. Yes he committed a cardinal sin of standing shirtless IN FRONT of Leon on stage while filming. But if you want to know what being around Leon Russell in the early 70’s was like, with A Poem Is A Naked Person Les Blank gave you the best gift anyone ever has.
To understand this film you first must know the back story. In the late 60’s Leon partnered up with British producer Denny Cordell. By 1972 they had made two timeless albums, Leon Russell and Leon Russell and the Shelter People. Now the world knew his name not just those in the music business. Denny and Leon had already made one successful music film with Mad Dogs and Englishmen and Denny, I think more than Leon, wanted to try again. Leon had just purchased a wonderful lakefront compound on a peninsula overlooking the Land of the Lakes in the Cherokee Nation outside Tulsa, Oklahoma. The idea was to add a recording studio to the house and musician’s cottages. “This craziness needs to be documented;” said someone. Already a prolific filmmaker, Les Blank was recommended and promptly hired. He showed up with his lovely soundman Maureen Gosling and the fun began. It lasted for three years.
Les and Maureen were immediately confronted with the fact that although Leon has done his share of interviews he probably never enjoyed one. Their subject was going to be uncooperative at best. The filmmakers reacted naturally by shooting Leon when they could and filming the life and times of the natives of Tulsa when they couldn’t. The movie that resulted is a time capsule of real America in the early 70’s as well as one hell of a profile of the man dubbed the Master of Time and Space.

Understand what this film is. This is a mid-1970's documentary about Leon Russell. This is not a concert film, yet there is some concert footage here. It's not a story of his life, it's just a film about Leon as Leon was in the 70's. I found it very interesting because it showed a side of Leon we haven't seen before. But you can certainly tell it was made in the 70's. It's got that 70's film feel to it. It wasn't what I expected, but it was still enjoyable because I like Leon Russell.

This is the best music documentary I have ever seen! (even better than The Last Waltz) Finally, a video that lives up to Leon's music. It's hard to believe they left this sitting for over 40 years.

In some ways... I can see why this film sat on the shelf awhile. Leon Russell is a compelling artist and evidently a pretty compelling person, so for that reason I give it three stars. As a film.... its pretty "60s". So don't expect a BBC documentarian's eye for structure and detail. This deal is pretty fast and loose, so hold on! Also, I would recommend that you avoid the brown acid :)

I would have liked more of Leon in a movie about him. To a certain extent it was Leon's own fault because he never liked interviews and seems like he avoided more input for whatever reason. Certainly glad I bought it but it could have been so much better.

I have been a huge Leon Russell fan for over forty years, so I preordered this DVD to get it today on the release date. This has some great moments in the early Leon Russell days, but it seemed to be more of a documentary about quirky Oklahoma happenings in the early 70s rather than really being about Leon Russell. It is definitely not a concert documentary. If you are a fan, you will like it. Just don't expect anybody who isn't a fan to watch it with you😜
