"Why the Mountains Are Black: Primeval Greek Village Music: 1907-1960" is the third collection of rare Greek 78s from collector/producer Christopher King and the first to appear on Jack White’s Third Man imprint. Like his previous Greek releases ("Five Days Married & Other Laments" and "Alexis Zoumbas: A Lament For Epirus, 1926-1928" respectively), "Why the Mountains Are Black" is a typically slick and idiosyncratic production from King, chock full of obsessively annotated “deep” notes on the music by King as well as copious photos and illustrations of Greek musicians, not to mention another fine Robert Crumb drawing on the cover. It is a strange product, a 2 cd (or two LP) collection of otherworldly music that seeks to enlighten listeners about a type of music so obscure, so alien to most ears, so dissonant that many Greek natives don’t even like it. Demotic music is the music of rural Greek villagers, so complex in its origins, so bizarre in its instrumentation, so deliberately beguiling and inaccessible to American ears that it requires multiple listens, a thorough reading of the liner notes, and perhaps a shot or two of Greek spirits (tsipouro) to fully appreciate. Easy listening, it ain’t.

The surprise then is that this largely indigenous music, dependent as it is on the physical region in which it exists and the people who inhabit it, achieves the distinction of sounding fresh, beautiful, exotic, and even “catchy” at times. You won’t likely dance to it (although many of the songs are intended for dancing), but you will be scratching your head to the strange sounds contained therein.
