There is the Amy Schumer who skewers pop culture and relationships and politics and is daringly irreverent and incisive. Then there is the going-for-the-cheap-gags Amy Schumer who does tampon jokes. Unfortunately, this movie is the latter. If you're going to do a rom-com trope that's been done a thousand times before, you have to do it with a wink to the audience. They know and you know it's a cliche, so you have to send it up and have fun with it. (The Mindy Project is brilliant at this). But this movie trots out all the rom-com cliches without a hint of irony. The tough, cynical party girl falls for the stodgy, cute guy, but is afraid to be loved because she has commitment issues. But of course, she realize she has to open her heart and love wins in the end. Hollywood's idea of female comic daring is to make diarrhea and penis jokes ("Bridesmaids", I'm looking at you), but it's not daring---it's just dumb. The funniest person in this film was Le Bron James, who had the best bits. I kept comparing this to The Mindy Project, which has a similar style of humor but seems so much more snappy and effortless. it could be that this style of humor doesn't work well in a feature-length format, but the pacing and delivery seem off. It lacked the quick throwaway one-liners that make for good comedy. You get the feeling that Amy knows this is not her best as well, and she's just phoning it in.

I forced my husband to watch this with me when it became available to rent. He was right; he didn’t end up liking it. After reading many bad reviews, I was worried that the trailer showed all the funny parts. For me that was not the case. I enjoyed many parts either because they were funny or because they were romantic in a weird sort of way. Yes, there are some cliches, but she puts a quirky spin on much of it.
Don’t watch this: if you don’t want to see naked men having awkward sex with Amy; if you don’t think her show is funny; if you don’t want to see Amy choosing horrible men to have sex with; if you are on a first, second or third date; if your children of any age are in the room.
I liked it because Amy comes from a dysfunctional family and expects to live out a similar existence, not connecting to any one man and continuing to focus on her career and life as a boldly sexual single woman. SPOILER ALERT: What she finds by accident is a man who inspires her to become a better person, but not in a few minutes, but after a painful breakup that makes her rethink who she has become. The end was so funny and romantic that I backed up to watch it several times. While the male lead is not classically handsome, he grows on you because of his integrity and love for Amy. In the end, this a story about overcoming a bad childhood to become your best self. I still would NOT want to be Amy, but I’d be happy if this fairytale would come true for her.

My favorite blatantly honest funny girl. Can be really naughty but it's all true! I love her and I'm 56 years old. I loved her sex scene with the body builder. Man, that was so spot on!! I watched her in the Last Comic Standing show many years ago where she only won second place. I thought they were insane to NOT pick her. She was by far the funniest!!

Reading through all the 1- to 3-star reviews here, I get the impression that most people thought this movie would have the same rapid-fire pacing as "Inside Amy Schumer." It doesn't. I also think they didn't "get" what this was about. I loved it, but then again, I could relate closely to the character she was playing. In Trainwreck, she plays a self-destructive woman who, in relationships, has an I'll-get-you-before-you-get-me attitude. She has to self-medicate to the point of blacking out to have sex with anyone, and if someone tries to get close to her, she shoves them out of her life as quickly as possible. Then she falls in love. The argument scenes with Aaron (Bill Hader) are absolutely classic for her personality type: He tries to approach their problems in order to solve them, but all she hears through her filter is "It's over." When she finally realizes she's throwing away something very special, she has to make a pretty big attempt at an apology.

Is this movie formulaic? Sure. Few movies aren't; everything is derivative of something. But I really enjoyed watching this, and the dance scene is truly funny and touching. Watch it just for LeBron James, who steals every scene he's in; ditto Tilda Swinton (I didn't even know it was her until I watched the ending credits roll--she's spectacular). There are cameos of Daniel Radcliffe and Marissa Tomei doing a ridiculous send-up of a black-and-white art film called "The Dog Walker," Ezra Miller is brilliant, and I love Bill Hader more and more every time I see his work.

Go into this looking for more than just a long episode of "Inside Amy Schumer."

Not at all what my wife and I expected, but a very good movie nonetheless. The humor is more subtle than the trailers lead us to believe and the movie as a whole is more serious than I expected. Still, the acting is fantastic and it was a nice way to spend the evening.
