I paid full price ($399) for this router, no NETGEAR friends and family program, or whatever...

At the time of writing this, I've had it installed for 3 days.

I LOVE this router. I switched over from the latest Apple AirPort Extreme (the tall one), and every single one of my networking issues has gone away! I'm not an expert on networking, but I know my way around, and I could not get my Apple network to run stably.

This router has a bunch of really useful features. The most useful, to me, are the antenna beam forming, and the Smart Connect features, which sort out the different types of wireless connections to ensure the best connection for each device, and send the most signal possible towards your device (as opposed to omnidirectional signal, sort of...).

I have amazingly quick wifi speeds now, and I'm finally able to use the full bandwidth of my internet connection I'm paying for. I currently pay for 200dn/20up, and I usually got around 70dn/15up on a good day with the AirPort. All I did was change out the router, and I'm now clocking 235dn/24up at peak use times.

Couldn't be happier. You get what you pay for!

Other things I like - this guy has 6 LAN ports plus a WAN port. That's 2 - 3 more ports than any other standard consumer level router. Also like the fact that 2 of the ports can link together to double the available bandwidth. Awesome for a heavily used NAS server, etc... Last little thing - it has holes to mount it on the wall. Why is this so difficult for manufacturers to include? It's just 2 little changes in the plastic mold - no extra parts, yet so incredibly useful. Thankfully, NETGEAR knows what's up. It's the little things...

Setup is easy, firmware interface is intuitive. All around awesome.

I have the nighthawk X6 and love it. Figured I would upgrade to the X8 for more speed and higher bandwidth with both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Netgear software is easy to use, firmware upgrade was so easy with the X8. My connections throughout the house were solid and I had excellent coverage. The cons are that this router is HUGE and even more noticeable with those big antennas. Nice positive is that you can turn off the LEDs.
To my most important criteria is network speeds. I turned on the smart connect which I think is an excellent feature for automatically handling / assinging your device to the 5ghz band that is less loaded. Worked like a charm. But I docked 1 star because in my testing speeds I noticed a small increase in speeds over my 2.4GHZ bands (but not enough to notice the difference and certainly not enough for the price). 5 GHZ was also a slight to often no increase over the measured speeds I had with my X6. So this router works great but......my x6 also worked great and in hindsight, I would choose the x6 again over buying the X8 and save the $$$. Also check out the CNET review which also notices the same thing with the speeds.

I had a few routers that were all a few years old. With all the wifi devices I have now, iPads, phones, laptops, FireTV, myQ garage doors, alarm system and on and on the mesh of different routers was a mess. None could handle the throughput needed, most were connected to old 2.4 b/g and my only old Netgear 5GHz was only n so it was time for an upgrade. I wanted a triband router and actually ordered a Asus AC3200 at a great Black Friday deal of $197 at a competitor, but then stumbled across this new Netgear AC5300 X8 Nighthawk and saw rave reviews and at a Black Friday prices of $299 on Prime I could not resist. Got it setup and tweaked and this thing screams. Hopefully it will be as reliable as my old Netgear router and the interface is the same so I love their advanced settings. All the devices are getting excellent signal and throughput. It is a bit iffy at the far end of the house 2 floors up, but I picked up a TP-Link C7 as an access point for the single device up there. This thing is huge, but my guess is they needed the size to avoid fans for cooling and all the components needed to support 3 bands, 6 Ethernet ports, 4 external and 4 internal antennas. Looks like the Asus will go back as soon as it arrives.

1/16/2016 Update
So after 2 months of ownership I wanted to update my review. This is still an awesome router. It does have a few quirks. First the UI gets sluggish which should not be the case with all the processing power this beast has. Also the UI does not always show correct status of the LAN ports as they are up, but the UI shows them down. Also anytime you make adjustments to the overall QOS settings (not devices) the router basically reboots, very annoying.

Back to the buggy network connection software again. Thought Netgear solved their issues long ago. The best router on the market by far is still the Netgear R7000 unit. I've used Netgear routers for years and the early units would lock up and had to be rebooted regularly. The introduction of the R series routers have been a good series until this latest r8500. My R7000 has never had to be rebooted from day one and is still my rock. I've configured the R8500 in a similar manner and the unit has locked up 3 times in 1 week. The lockup requires a complete reboot of the unit as genie nor direct IP access is available. Terrible experience at this point.
@@@ Update as of 12/29/15 @@@ The LVL 1 support team at Netgear took my information and had me try 2 beta firmwares that did not resolve the issue. They asked for all the devices connected to the router and screenshots with the config file. All the information was supplied and escalated to a higher LVL support group. I have not heard back from the support group since Dec 25th. My time is being used to beta test their product. They obviously know something is not right with the unit as my Actiontec GL1000 router works perfectly as does my Nighthawk R7000. The Nighthawk R8500 will lock up with no access to the internet or internal setup. All lights remain on but the unit becomes unresponsive and a power cycle is required to restore access. STAY AWAY from this unit till NetGear gets their act straightened out. I will be reviewing the ASUS 5300 unit once I return both the R8500 units that are buggy and lock up. Goodbye Netgear!
