The bag performed well - easy to pack with a lot of room but not too heavy! A very well thought out bag - lots of features and built to last. This bag is for someone who appreciates a piece of luggage that performs "As Advertised"! I should know - I was in the luggage business for 25 years! Dave Kern

I posted the following review on July 5, 2010, but the link on Amazon is now dead for some reason.
This is luggage that was clearly dreamed up by someone who travels. It features a smartly-designed double interior compartment which can be converted to a single compartment, if desired. In the bottom compartment, there's a movable shelf system, so that when your bag is upright, everything doesn't all get squooshed to the bottom. And because of the way it is constructed, the bag doesn't tip over when it's full. One nice added touch is the orange interior, a seemingly inconsequential detail, but it makes finding small/dark items a bit easier. Other features include:
* three zippered mesh pockets inside the bag (one in the upper compartment and two in the lower)
* three exterior pockets
* an expansion zipper which increases capacity by 1.5"
* four exterior compression straps to ensure the bag stays securely closed
* a built-in ID pocket
* a hide-away add-a-bag strap
* interior straps to secure items
* two handles at each end of the bag (in addition to the telescoping handle) for easy grabbing out of your trunk or off the baggage carousel
Overall, this is a tough, well-made, and thoughtfully-designed bag which comes with a lifetime warranty. All my luggage is now eBags only.

As someone who travels regularly, I can tell you that I love this bag. I purcahsed it a few months ago to replace my beat-up "Travel-Pro" bag. The two seperate compartments are perfect and I love how much stuff I can fit in this thing. Seriously, you could travel for a week and have room to spare. The only thing I don't like is that there is no handle on the side. This makes it a bit awkward for me to get into my trunk when it's fully loaded and heavy, but I can live with it.

Love this bag. I always pack too bring too much stuff and previously used lighter weight wheeled duffel bags which end up mashed by the airline, wouldn't stand on end and would flip when rolling. The Mother Lode Jr rolls easy, stands up and fits plenty. I got the turquoise color and this bag very visible on baggage claims belts. I like the extra clip straps on the sides are peace of mind against zipper failure.
Just used the bag for an equestrian holiday in the UK with paddock boots, half chaps, helmet, breeches, rain gear plus a regular wardrobe for touring in warm or cool/damp UK weather. I was afraid that I would be overweight for the airline allowance of 23 kilos, so I did not use the optional expansion. My bag weighing just under 19 kilos which means that I could have extended my bag if I needed. My bag rolled so easily through transfers at the airport, at train stations and in rolling to my hotel over cobblestones near the train station (no taxi needed with an easy rolling bag.)
The full bag at 19 kilos is heavy to move up/down stairs, however when having to do stairs there several handles to grab the bag with two hands to do stairs. (I was able to do stairs alone, though slowly. This bag though heavier was easier to maneuver then my other duffels.)

I travel a lot and purchase luggage every three years because I wear them out from use. I bought the bag due to the excellent reviews. I agree that the bag holds a surprising amount. I used it for a week's worth of clothes, 3 pairs of shoes, toiletries and three hair tools. I was impressed. It rolls well and is made of good quality fabric. The pockets and compartments are really well designed and useful. I am generally happy with the purchase.
Items people should be aware of:
It's big. It's definitely not a checkable bag.
All the cool compartments add weight. When packed, the bag is really heavy. I didn't get that impression watching the website videos on this bag.
It doesn't have a bottom handle to help put it in the trunk of the car . I read this complaint in some reviews but didn't really understand it until I purchased the bag. I'm surprised that such a good bag has such an obvious design flaw.
The four side latches seem a bit pointless. I don't stuff the bag until its bursting. So I have no use for the latches. It's annoying to have to unlatch them when you need to quickly enter the bag. If i could do it again, i would purchase the Ebag luggage style that doesn't come with the side latches.
Not a huge deal, but the instructions reference a web site that shows how to put the wires reinforcements into the side of the bag. However the website in the instruction booklet no longer works. I had to go track the video down to figure out how to put the luggage together.

I've had the smaller Mother Lode TLS Junior 21" for a couple of years now and use it for business travel, then wanted something larger for longer trips. I absolutely love the design and construction of the Mother Lode TLS duffels!
- hard outer case on the bottom gives added protection while the canvas top lightens the load
- three good sized outer pockets with sturdy zippers
- three outer handles (in addition to the telescoping handle) make it easy to maneuver the duffel in and out of trunks: one black handle at the bottom, one on the very top, and one near the top on front
- four straps around the outside protect the zippers from pulling if you tend to overpack the duffel
- inside bottom compartment has two removable (and removable) dividers, making it easy to organize shoes, toiletries, etc.
- inside top compartment is divided by a zippered wall that can be rolled up and out of the way for bigger items. Two security straps are also inside this compartment.
- colors other than black make it easier to spot on the baggage claim conveyer belt
- I cannot find any yet. This 25" duffel has performed excellently in 2 trips and I expect it to perform well just like my 21" duffel has for the past 3 years.

I really love this bag. It worked beautifully for a week long trip to California. Really like the shelf feature and it wheels perfectly. The one thing I would like is a lifting handle on the top for when you have to pick it up for stairs, buses etc.

I've used this bag for several trips now, so this review is based on actual experience. We liked it so much, we bought another.
The primary purpose for this bag, and the subsequent one purchased, is for international travel to stay under the smallest checked bag limit in size (62" on Air New Zealand) and weight (50#). All of our existing bags exceed these limits. Its very light empty, the wheels are sturdy, the compartmentalization very nice, and it does hold a lot of stuff. I really like the hybrid outer shell concept with the hard case lower half and nylon upper half.
My wife, who is the expert packer, opens it up to pack rather than pack through the top. The lower half holds all the necessary toiletries, shoes and "stuff" with adjustable separators, while the top holds clothes. Plenty of room so far for a week's worth of packing. (See the video for more information.) There are enough pockets and nooks for little things and it trains perfectly with its matching case or the 21" carry on case.
Even stuffed, we can only get about 45# in it of normal packing. Very dense stuff could exceed the 50# limit.
Very happy, highly recommended...

This bag is great. Can't believe how much can pack. Also the dividers makes everything stay where they should. Rolls well. Two compartments with side sections are great in helping organizing the suitcase. Best one I have had. Need to check through. Took on golf outing for 4 days. Room to spare.

This is a terrific bag for all the reasons others have mentioned. But what I have also discovered is how well eBags supports its products with an extremely responsive and accommodating customer service department -- even when it comes to the small things. This is my third eBag, and all of them have become favorites. Last week our new puppy chewed off several of the zipper pulls. While it wasn't the worst tragedy, it bummed me out because I love the bag, including all the nice touches. So I sent them a quick email and back came an envelope with four new pulls and the related cord pieces. These guys are great!
