One of the better eBay books,
By
This review is from: eBay™ Strategies: 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business (Paperback)
This book targets people looking to make a full-time living selling on eBay. It is not targeted at buyers or infrequent sellers. The book does a good job of presenting information and it has a number of great tips that will benefit any seller. Infrequent sellers will have to wade through a lot of business strategy text to uncover the most valuable tips. Overall, it was one of the better eBay books I read.
After reading the top eBay books, below are my recommendations: ---Beginner with eBay and computers--- 1. The Official eBay Bible ---eBay Seller--- 1. Sell it on eBay 2. eBay Hacks ---Full-Time eBay Business (not for the casual seller)--- 1. eBay Strategies 2. eBay Business the Smart Way

A jewel (mostly) for the eBay-centered entrepreneur,

This review is from: eBay™ Strategies: 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business (Paperback)
"eBay Strategies" is a book whose time has come. Scot Wingo, the author, is very successful in providing a strategic framework to build a solid eBay-centered business.
Although it is not difficult to see how the book can translate into a promotional tool for the author's services in the long run (which I don't see a problem with, either), it does not come across as a "salespitch" book. This is a very logical and thought out book with thorough and insightful examples that anyone who's selling anything on eBay could find useful. However, it is mostly meant to help people with enough items being put for sale on eBay and entrepreneurs who base their sales operations on eBay. The only issue I had with the book was the sometimes excessive use of acronyms that keeps you going back to remember their meaning, but after a while, you get used to it (obviously too, after a while of applying his framework, it becomes second nature!) All in all, this is one of the best books on selling over eBay I've run into in a good while. As someone who has been selling (and buying) on eBay for over three years now, I highly recommend it, mostly for eBay-centered entrepreneurs: there was almost not a single chapter in it where I could not learn something.

When all else fails, make up an acronym,

It is a very good book as far as basic advice toward running an ebay business goes, but the book gets very confusing for non-marketing types who don't use acronyms and buzz words in an e-business setting. It's a good thing I was a business development manager and project administrator for a dot com before reading this book, otherwise I would not have gotten very much out of it. This is mainly because it is just not geared toward the majority of eBay members and store members. It really is meant for those whose goal it is to be Power Sellers on eBay and at the top of their category.
This book has a very definite corporate feel to it with lots of bar graphs and charts and figures and strategies. If you want to kick all the competition out of your way, then this is the book for you. If you have more modest goals, it still is a good read, but it could have been done better. The Five P's for having a successful business on eBay: Product, Placement, Performance, Price and Promotion definitely are worth remembering. Otherwise, the number crunching and acronyms are a definite distraction to what might have been a decent eBay book.

I am an artist selling very high-end collectibles on ebay. It's very important that my presentation and approach are equal to the value of these items. I have read MANY books on ebay selling; Scot's book is light years ahead of any book that I have read! I'll keep it by me, always. And, yes, my results have been very satisfying.

A Reality Check for your business.,

This review is from: eBay™ Strategies: 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business (Paperback)
This book is not for the light hearted. It truly will tell you what you are doing right(and that wont be much) and what you do wrong. I had no idea where I was in my business until I read this book. Truly a slap in the face and a wakeup call. Ths is a must have book if you are serious about your eBay business. Worth 100x's the price and more. If you are looking for a candy coated Amway rah rah on how great your doing on eBay, this is not for you. After reading this book, I see exactly what we have done wrong for the last 2 years, and we see how far we have to go to be a "real business". This is like a full time business consultant on staff for less than the price of a decent lunch. Get it now..! Way to go Scot.

Nice to see a book that goes beyond the mundane how-to's of selling on eBay. Wingo directs his book at experienced eBay sellers who are looking to scale up to the next level of sales. Frankly, if you have a marketing or economics degree, none of the general principles he espouses here is new. But for many sellers, they may well be. Like the price-velocity curve. Essentially the supply and demand curves of classical economics, but presented in a simpler form. A utility here is how you can empirically map out this curve for your items, if you have many instances of them.
Perhaps the sagest advice is that for a typical item, in its life cycle, eBay is best suited for the introduction and liquidation stages. What is also good is that he is not bedazzled by eBay. He says you should also explore other sales channels, like Amazon and Yahoo Stores, especially if the items are still in season. I found this to be the best part of the book. Shows that he's kept his objectivity during analysis. He puts eBay in a broader context of assessment. By contrast, if you look at other books on eBay, quite often they focus solely on it, and never present cases when you should not sell through it.

Having been an eBay Seller for over 5 years, and a PowerSeller for as long as they've had the program, I really appreciated FINALLY finding a book that could bring me to the next level. Tired of reading the same old re-hashed text on how to take a good eBay picture? Want to join the big boys on eBay? Then this book is for you.

Scott Wingo must be the hardest working writer about topics EBAY. This book is truly comprehensive, truly written for the audience it proports to be (experienced sellers who want to move to the next level). This book is written like a good text book, chapter summaries, suggestions for things to practice, etc. An excellent reference.

This review is from: eBay™ Strategies: 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business (Paperback)
Not a casual read, but rich in professional insight. I get so tired of reading books that should have been published in oinly a few pages. This is not one of them. I have an undergraduate degree in communications, and found this to be a nice refresher in advertising and marketing, but also full of insight into applying today's resources and methodologies to eBay. I also use this book in my teaching as an eBay Education Specialist.

Scot has rolled into one book all the concepts it took me two years of applicable MBA classes and five years of info swapping with other ebay sellers to learn. He does this in a straightforward, easy to read style, with plenty of screen shots and examples.
While the book has a lot of good information, it is really not for the "little bit of everything" ebay seller. Scot talks about competing with other sellers to be dominant in your category. And he gives some great tools for analyzing your sales "per SKU". So if, like me, you sell a variety of unique items over every category there is, and are happy doing it that way, you probably won't become a millionare and probably won't find a big part of this book helpful. On the other hand, if you are looking for a niche, want a product line, or have one already, I can't think of a better tool to have on hand than Scot's "Ebay Strategies". |
