At this point, after having read both manuals, I watched the videos from Craftwell, on YOUTUBE.

Let me start by saying that I have never owned a personal cutting machine - the eCraft is the first one I purchased.

Tried adjusting it to a lighter setting, but to get it light enough not to tear means not cutting through paper.

I am an avid papercrafter and purchased this as a supplement to my Cricut. With promises of being able to cut multiple sheets without a mat - and software that would allow the use of SVG files, it seemed like it would be a good way to do some mass production. I have a love-hate relationship with the mats for my Cricut and was really excited about the possibilities for cutting without a mat. However, I have to say I have been pretty underwhelmed. The reasons are:

1. The software is not capable and has only rudimentary features. The first version was downright buggy and impossible to use. The one and only update that has come out fixed a lot of bugs but did not add any capability. For those of us used to using Sure Cuts A Lot or Make The Cut with our Cricuts and SVG files, this software is in the dark ages. A software update promised for late December has yet to materialize - and at this point, Craftwell is being very vague about when that update may actually become available.

2. The level of customer support from Craftwell is pretty underwhelming. There is one fairly active Yahoo group for this machine, but the owner of that group has pretty much limited it to "happy talk" so discussing problems with the machine and software is not welome there. Craftwell has a community on their website, but the level of activity there is very minimal. Their facebook page is an embarassment - people begging for information, updates, and help that just sit there unanswered. The documentation that comes with the machine is very slim - and Craftwell has been pretty spotty about answering questions.

3. The image cards that are available for the machine are - in my opinion - pretty cartoonish and not very interesting.

I purchased eCraft Craftwell digital cutter after reviewing comments from customers thinking I would return it in 30 or 60 days if it does not meet my expectation. After almost 2 weeks of good use, I have decided to keep it as it does everything that I need to do. I use MTC (Make The Cut, promotional value $58)and Inkscape (freeware) and sometimes SnagIt softwares with this machine.

Now, this is not to say that other comments are not true but if you take time to go through youtube and other website tutorials to learn, it should let you do what you may need to. Good thing about purchasing from Amazon.com is you can always return it back if it does not meet your needs, that is, within reasonable time limit.

Color Name: Purpleberry Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
eCrafts Electronic Die Cutter is quite a remarkable machine, but don't expect to run with it right out of the box. You'll be quite disappointed - I know I was. However, once I saw tutorial videos by Purple Paper Paradise [...] on how to get best out of the eCraft die cutter, then I started getting the results I wanted.

While the eCraft boasts being able to cut without a mat - and it does - you still need a stabilizer for your paper to avoid tears and wrinkling. Thankfully, a piece of plain cardstock works fabulous as a stabilizer and can be reused many times. The eCraft has textured rollers that grip your paper tightly, so you don't need any adhesive to hold the paper in place.

Another key part to getting clean cuts is using the proper pressure. Too much pressure and likely you'll tear your paper. The online tutorials show you how to do this and it's not difficult. (I now keep a notebook to record the settings for different paper types for future reference.)

Once I learned these key points on how to use the eCraft, I started getting gorgeous cuts from all kinds of paper. A little investment in my time to learn the eCraft is now giving me joy in using the machine. My first project was a birthday card with butterflies on it and my sister loved it. (I wish I remembered to take a pic of it before I mailed it away.)

This eCraft is a keeper for me. The more I use it, the more I'm loving it. I love the purpleberry color too.

PROS:
1. Solidly built machine. Watching this machine work is fascinating.
2. Can feed paper via front, back tray, or even from a roll.
3. No sticky mats needed for cutting.
4. Can connect with your PC via USB.
5. Downloadable software for making or changing designs for eCraft.
6. Pretty colors.

I do spray paint art. I was hoping to use this machine as an automated stencil-cutter to give me a high quality edge.

It failed.

It's a very interesting device. It has a lot of potential, but it fails at a couple of levels. Paper would frequently get caught in a little gap in the front that the paper is supposed to glide under. This would cause it to ruffle, and would ruin te cut going on in the back.

Frequently, when cutting, shapes would not be closed, so a circle would end up looking more like a swirl.

The software was simplistic, but could handle SVGs well enough that I could deal with it.

This machine seems like it'd be perfect for the scrapbook fanatic. I tried simpler shapes and it did a fantastic job.

For detailed work, though...this device is not up to par.

I hope that machines like this can be made more accurate, and more intelligent.

I got it in Pink, and I must admit that the color rocks!!

I returned the device because I could not afford having a machine that didn't do what I needed it to do considering it was bought as a business tool. The return process was effortless, and I was happy to have no hitches in getting back my money. Thanks Amazon and Craftwell!
