We have approximately 5 different electric powered lanterns in our camping gear that we have collected over the past few years. None of them come close to the versatility of the eGear 10-Day Lantern. We purchased the eGear from Amazon a few weeks ago based on a stellar review from Camping Life magazine. According to tests conducted by Camping Life, the unit runs a true 40 hours on the high setting and an unbelievable 240 hours on the lowest setting. From a personal standpoint, we still had plenty of battery power left after a week of camping. There are several things about the eGear lantern that are very appealing in addition to its ability to remaining operating for long periods of time. First, the unit is relatively small in comparison to a full-size gas powered lantern. Second, the rubberized base keeps it from sliding around when you set the unit on slippery surfaces. Moreover, the wide brim on top of the unit is respectably flexible, such that if the unit is tipped-over, little if any damage should result. However, the quality that we like most about this product are the various output settings. The lowest setting is perfect for when you awake in the middle of the night and everything is in total darkness and you need to find your shoes or some other object. The output on this lowest setting is nearly perfect for those types of scenarios. There are about 6 or 7 other levels of output before reaching the maximum setting. The maximum setting is more than adequate for outdoor use from moving about the campsite to set-up of take-down of the camping equipment. Of course, this electric lantern along with the many others available in the marketplace, do not provide the massive output of a Coleman Powerhouse Dual Fuel Lantern or comparable gas lantern. However, this electric lantern is much handier for the obvious reasons of instant on/instant off, no special fuel, no deadly carbon monoxide, no ability to start fires, etc. etc. The only thing the eGear might not be suitable for is hanging in a small tent. Although it comes with a hanging attachment, this unit is a little large and a little heavy (in comparison to tiny LED lanterns designed specifically for hanging in a tent) to be used for this purpose. All-in-all, this is a great product.
