3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for the price but no CDRW or DVD, December 8, 2002
This review is from: eMachines Desktop Computer T1742 (1.7 GHz Intel Celeron, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
This computer is okay for the price, and it is a good choice for people looking for a fast *no frills* computer who don't need the most powerful machine on the market. However it lacks a lot of things I like in a computer (such as a CDRW or DVD drive) so I suggest spending just a little more and get the next model up (T1840) which has these things built in.

The good:
The 1.7GHz Celeron is not my first choice of CPUs, but it's fast enough and cheap. The main difference it and a standard P4 is that the Celeron has 1/4 of the L2 cache (which makes it run about 10-20% slower than a P4 running at the same speed). I would consider this plenty of CPU power for now, and since it supports SSE2 (special instructions that will be used by more and more software in the future) it has a decent usable life span ahead of it. It has built in Ethernet for home networking or connecting to a DSL or cable modem, and USB 2.0 for scanners, MP3 players, digital cameras, and a host of other devices.

Windows XP which is (I hate to admit this) a great operating system that rivals the ease of a Mac, on a computer a fast as a three thousand dollar PowerMac.

I find the 128MB of PC2100 (also known as 266MHz DDR Ram) to be adequate for most users but it's easy to add more later.

A 40GB hard disk is frankly more than you will need for quite a while unless you want to load a ton of games on it. I can't tell you how many friends I have with a new 100GB hard disks with 80GB free!

The bad:
No DVD or CDRW drive. I don't watch DVDs on my computer often, but once in a while a DVD will let you access special features over the internet. It's not a big deal it only adds a few dollars onto the price of a computer, so I don't know why the left it out. The CDRW adds about fifty bucks onto the price, but it lets you share your pictures or other data with friends and family easily. It's the new floppy drive.

Another weak point for this system is the graphics. The graphics are built into the motherboard, and there is no AGP slot to add a video card later. The graphics fine for most software and will run any game on the market now, but newer games may not run at their highest settings. For that reason you should not buy this system if you want to keep buying the latest 3D games.

To sum it up: I really suggest spending a little more on the next model up, but if you are sure you don't want a DVD or CDRW drive then this is a good choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Starter PC & Cheap too ..., October 26, 2002
This review is from: eMachines Desktop Computer T1742 (1.7 GHz Intel Celeron, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought this for my Mum to browse the net and do email. Great price for an able PC. Built in Ethernet means it can use our cable modem connection. Well worth it for <400 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable workstation, great value., December 1, 2002

This is a no frills PC that can easily serve as a workstation on a network. It can also be a great basic machine for someone whose needs are very simple, such as Internet surfing, emailing and word processing. On a reliability note, I own several eMachines, including 2 eOnes that are about 2.5 yrs old, and despite their limited specs and lack of expandability, they've rendered trouble free service since they were purchased.
