5.0 out of 5 stars Safely backup your images & data, November 15, 2008
This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 160GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I was intrigued by the concept but in the past heard stories of the "black box" failing. But I have put this through its paces and it works great. It has slots for cards (CF, SD, etc) or you can connect directly to your camera via USB or your computer via USB or eSata. The unit verifies the data during transfer and can tell you when the HD is failing. Speaking of which it uses a standard laptop drive and is designed so the user can upgrade to a larger drive on his own.

The Nexto DI doesn't just backup images - it also can backup your video camcorder. With the unit you can see a file structure and backup your computer itself (think itune files). But with its OTG system you don't need a computer when you are on assignment.
I know many different brands show up when your search Nexto but my 2 cents is stick with the original.

I use this with my Nikon D700 camera CF cards. I'm going to Venice, Italy very shortly. My reason for getting this was because I fully expect to take somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 shots in RAW 14 bit uncompressed format! I have two 16Gb and one 8Gb UDMA CF card. My average photo takes up about 26Mb (yes, twenty six megs!) when shooting scenes with a lot of detail. Needless to say, I gonna be runnin' outta memory cards! So as an economical alternative, I bought this in the 160Gb version. I've tested this out and it works fine... and FAST! The single button control is all you need! Everything's menu driven on the little screen on the face of the unit. READ the directions!! Oh, BTW, no manual comes with the unit. But you can download the complete manual in PDF format from the NEXTO website. I HIGHLY recommend this unit for anyone who doesn't want to bring a big heavy laptop to save their images... or even a netbook. The only downside is that there is no way to view your images on the NEXTO. Even if it had a screen for showing images, since I shoot in raw mode, it would not be able to convert Nikon NEF files to JPEG without Nikon View software. I don't believe ANY portable drive has that capability! You cannot view raw images from ANY camera on any portable OTG hard drive. You would have to shoot in JPEG format or simultainious Raw and JPEG.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacing drive will void warranty, March 10, 2009

This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 160GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
The previous reviewer's comment that this is designed so the user can upgrade to a larger drive on his own is a bit misleading. Perhaps the drive is easily replaceable, but doing so will void the warranty. The unit has stickers that clearly state the warranty is void if broken.

I bought this based on that comment but immediately returned it due to the warranty issue. I've ordered a higher capacity one - I'd rather pay a bit more than have my warranty voided. Since I've not had a chance to use this and Amazon makes me pick a rating, I've rated it 5 for now.
