FANTASTIC for SPEEDY backups or VACATIONS without a computer with you,
By
This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 320GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I just bought the casing and used my own sata hard drive but i can say that this is a FANTASTIC DEVICE. I mainly used SDHC cards (the older versions were did not have an SD/SDHC slot AND only accepted IDE drives, not the new and much higher capacity SATA - make sure you get the extreme or a similar one that supports these things), usually 16GB but have tested 32Gb and 8Gb and smaller to make sure they all worked, whcih they did. This copies your pictures/videos EXTREMELY FAST. I usually just move them over, so it deletes them off your SD card for you, but you can also just copy them so it keeps a copy on a HD and also on your media card also. The battery life on this thing is also amazing - didn't have to recharge it once on a 30 day backpacking trip in europe, which i used roughly 40GB of pictures/videos through my digital camera. not once needing to recharge and all of the pictures/videos saved quickly and conveniently. I mainly bought it for trips like that without having to buy a bunch of cards, only needing 1. I am now on my 2nd 30 day trip and just used it again, literally 30 seconds ago - 10GB transfered in roughly 4 minutes, if that. BUY THIS NOW if you need it, you won't regret it :)

Good portable backup unit,

I was intrigued by the concept but in the past heard stories of the "black box" failing. But I have put this through its paces and it works great. It has slots for cards (CF, SD, etc) or you can connect directly to your camera via USB or your computer via USB or eSata. The unit verifies the data during transfer and can tell you when the HD is failing. Speaking of which it uses a standard laptop drive and is designed so the user can upgrade to a larger drive on his own.
The Nexto DI doesn't just backup images - it also can backup your video camcorder. With the unit you can see a file structure and backup your computer itself (think itune files). But with its OTG system you don't need a computer when you are on assignment. Yes, the same command can either move or copy your images. When it moves images they are gone from your card. The difference is if you either press the button for a short time or long. I would suggest that in their firmware they have the unit ask for confirmation before it moves the files (just like it does with formatting).

What a great gadget! Intuitive design. Shot photos all day, then downloaded them to the Nexto each evening. This will be a necessary part of what we pack for every vacation. I recommend it to everyone.

Instead of storing my images, this deleted them.
There's just 1 button, and a tiny window to read the not-so-clear instructions. So the ON/OFF button is also used to add or delete images. Short stroke, long stroke - make sure you push it correctly or hours of work can be deleled by mistake. The instructions are not very helpful (no manual), and no luck getting anyone from the maker (Nexto) on the phone after repeated calls. Of course, I returned mine.

Based on all the hype on the web, especially here http://www.cameratown.com/reviews/Nexto_Extreme/index.cfm/hurl/id%7C4637, I ordered the 320GB version with 2 day shipping. Missed the UPS man on Friday. I had to pick it up on Tuesday, so it becomes 6 day shipping with 2 day shipping charge. (That is why I hate UPS. FedEx allows to put it on hold for pickup before the first delivery, not UPS. It'd be great if Amazon allows the choice of FedEx as the default carrier!). Now back to this devise.
I open the box and found a 250GB one instead of the 320GB I ordered. Thanks Amazon for the surcharge! Plug it in, the button lit up (good). Stick an SD card with HD video (.MTS files) from a Canon cam. Nothing happened. Push the button, still nothing happened. Connect it through USB to my Windows XP machine, the devise is powered on (GOOD), but not recognized by the computer either. Did the back'n forth drill, combination, restart, the usual fix-it-yourself drill, no help at all. Basically I paid $300 for a paper weight that doesn't do anything for me. As to the build quality, well, not that great. It shows with big paper stickers on each side that says - the warranty is voided if removed. Well, thank you very much. I don't think these stickers will stay there that long with all the travellings it'd be used for. Also, the the outside cheap screws used to hold the cover together looks like somebody just put it together in their home garage with those "Making $10k at month from home" scheme. The SD slot is of questionable quality as well - the SD card goes in with quite a bit wiggle room - sign of danger. Also, the DC plug only sinks in about 1/4 of its length, a clear sign of shawdy design and poor workmanship. I definitely will not trust my photos and videos with a piece of junk like this. I will have to take the laptop instead. This belongs to the return bin of Amazon. By the way, this is the first time Amazon sent me the wrong item in the past 10+ years. And worse, it didn't even work! Guess I've been lucky all this time without knowing it :) P.S. Returning to Amazon has been a bliss: first time for me to do it and I am pretty impressed. I'd like to hope this will be my last though. It's waste of time and the 2-day shipping cost for nothing. I've always done my homework before buying from Amazon. Only this time I got fooled. Come to think of it, even if this thing actually worked the first time, would I trust it with 320G data on my travel? I doubt it. For one thing, any of the compact hard drive on the market looks and works far better than this one. The workmanship on this devise is so 1990ish. Local Costco sells a 1GB compact hard drive that is smaller, much slicker, and works the first time, for just $99! Guess I just got a smaller dead drive from Amazon. I opted the 2-day shipping because I really needed it on a urgent trip and I was expected it to work as advertised... I have to admit that the devise looks much better than the real thing. My two cents: Go with your laptop (or netbook) and external hard drive if necessary. It's heavier but far more reliable and proven technology. After all, if you lose your data, all the camera gear, setup, time and effort will all be wasted for nothing. |
