5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great but 1 problem., June 27, 2009

This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I just received my Nexto Extreme 2700 500gb device today, and have put it through the paces. It works great on my SDHC Cards. I took over a hundred pictures and it was extremely quick in downloading them. I am using a 16gb Transcend Class 6 card. The download time was something like 20 seconds. Next I hooked it up to my Sony Handycam camera and it downloaded the movie files very quickly. No problems there. It recognized the drive after I had everything turned on and dowloaded it with no problems. I hooked the Nexto to my computer through my USB connection and it downloaded all to my computer quickly and without a hitch. The only problem I had with the device is this: I took over 100 pictures and downloaded the card to the Nexto. Then I took an additional 20 pictures. I was under the impression the Nexto would recognize the new pictures and would just download them, but it didn't. It downloaded 120 pictures instead of just the 20. I tried it several times and the results were always the same. It downloaded the whole file and not just the new pictures. Not a really big deal, but I read that this was a feature the Nexto had and unfortunately was unable to make the Nexto perform that way. I looked through all the literature that came with the Nexto and nowhere do they mention that feature. All in all I am very happy with the Nexto. The speed is really fast. I just wish it would recognize my previous downloads and upload only the new pictures. Addition --- I printed out the manual [...] and figured out what I was doing wrong. Now once a card has been read, when more pictures are taken and the card is inserted again, the Nexto gives the choice of copying new files or copying the whole card. I now give this product 5 STARS!!!! It is a great product in every way.
Update 8/9/09 I used the Nexto while I was in Vietnam for just about a month. I took 4259 pictures and 495 videos and all of it was stored on the Nexto. It downloads so quick it is amazing. I also have a Wolverine 7000 160gb, and it is so slow it was unreal. Both worked good but the Nexto just screamed and the Wolverine was dead slow. I backed up video from my Sony Handycam, pictures from my Canon SD500 camera (SD), my Nikon D90 (SDHC), and my Kodak video mini camera. I couldn't be happier with the Nexto. It was well worth the price. Rolla

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic solution for backups on the go!, July 12, 2009
This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I used this on a recent trip to California where I ended up backing up around 140 GB worth of pictures (5DII monster files!) over a two week period. I also had a Wolverine FlashPac as additional backup, and the contrasts in speed could not have been starker. While the Wolverine took over half an hour for about 6 GB of data, the NEXTO copied it over in around 5 mins! I had to copy the data out to my laptop to verify as I thought something had gone wrong with the copy. I highly recommend this device!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great so far, October 20, 2009

I was really hoping to avoid having to take a laptop on an upcoming trip to Russia but knew that I might not have enough CF cards to cover all that I wanted to shoot. Additionally, I am fairly fanatical about backing up my photos on a trip. I looked around and it seemed from reviews on Amazon and other sites that storage devices like the Nexto had finally come of age. The earlier back up devices in this category were of low quality and plagued with bugs. I have tested this unit with some cards that I had recently shot. It worked perfectly. The Nexto copy the pictures flawless from the CF to the HD very quickly. The user interface is perfectly simple and intuitive. The disk mounted on my Mac like any other portable HD. Plug and play. The USB hook up was fast and easy. I imported the shots into Lightroom without a hitch. This unit is lightweight, easy to use, and seems to be of decent build quality. I want to put it through further tests but so far it is a winner.

I recently used this on a trip to Africa where I was worried about both running out of space on my CF cards (Sandisk Extreme 16GB and 8GB cards) as well as wanting a backup of my images in case a card failed or was lost/stolen. I didn't have any problems and the speed seemed to be close to advertised. I only use it in "copy" mode and the only time the incremental backup didn't work is when I deleted some test shots off the card after the initial backup -- so you should wait until you do the last backup on the card before deleting any files.

One thing to note, which I don't think is documented, is that you can use a generic USB wall charger to trickle charge this unit and avoid having to bring yet another charger if you are tight on space.

The only downside of this product is that it's a bit pricey, but in the end was worth the peace of mind and I did end up filling all my cards so it was great to be able to reuse a few and not have to bring a laptop.

It does come with all cables and a thin case -- I also used a Domke wrap to add some protection when it was in my pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nexto 500 GB works great!, August 21, 2010

This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I purchased the Nexto eXtreme3 500 GB Digital Hi-speed OTG Backup Storage device to ensure that vacation videos and photographs were backed up. I did not want to haul a laptop with me. The size and portability of the Nexto drive fit the bill. It is easy to operate. You turn it on and plug your memory card into the appropriate slot. It detects the memory card and displays prompts for the backup. It copies data to the drive quickly, and I have not experienced any errors. The one button control is easy to use and did not cause any confusion. The internal battery life is good. One minor complaint would be the small display screen. Most prompts are easy to read, but a larger screen would be a bonus. Connecting the Nexto to my iMac worked flawlessly. The Nexto just shows up as another drive. You can then manipulate the data just as if it were on any other attached device. To sum up my review, the Nexto did exactly what it was advertised to do. Although it is not the fanciest of the standalone storage devices, it performs well and I would not have any problem recommending this device to others. Good job Nexto!

I had been using Wolverine products to back up my SD cards in the field, but when I started shooting digital video they were too slow. The NEXTO unit works beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great protection against lost files, July 3, 2009
This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I got one of the Nexto units after seeing a demonstration at PPA Nationals and then again at WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers Int'l). Have used it with Canon 5D and 50D. The unit transferred 63 11meg RAW files in 71 seconds using a Ridata 233X UDMA 8gig CF card. As I commneted on the other review, my unit did recognize already copied files from my still cameras - including a friend's Olympus. It also recognized Canon video files shot on a Canon camcorder saved onto a SDHC card. I haven't tried Sony files yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely reliable, July 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: NEXTO eXtreme3 500GB Digital Hi-Speed OTG Backup Storage (Electronics)
I'm a linguist doing research in a remote village along the Amazon River. I bought the Nexto Extreme so that I could back up my audio recordings. The last time I was in the village, the generator broke and we were without power for days. My laptop quickly ran out of battery, but the Nexto Extreme allowed me to continue recording and backing up my field data. Without it, I probably would have had to return to the city (a 2-3 day trip down the Amazon). One full battery charge allowed me to transfer about 80 GB of audio files. It is amazing how fast this device copies data. I would recommend the Nexto Extreme as a backup device for anyone doing field research in remote locations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, except not 500GB, only 466GB, September 10, 2009

This on the go drive seems to do everything it says it does and speedily. However, I feel it is deceptive to claim it is "500 GB" when it is 500 billion bytes and really 466 GB. Label it what it is. I feel cheated by 7.5%.
Update: I have owned this for one year and it is going strong ... and fast.
