In case people are wondering, I wanted to note that this book is a reference for Scots Gaelic, not for Irish Gaelic.

I mean, come on . . . . The Title Says It All!!! Great plot, perfect character development and a wonderful twist in the end.

Okay, so it's a reference book and not all that. But it is the best grammer reference we have used in 15 years of home schooling.

Too hard for me to get understand although this would probably be a great reference for a more accomplished Gaelic speaker.

I would love to have tea with this author as I suspect he is both brilliant and interesting. I had to stop and check the publishing date to see this was not written in the 1800's as that is the writing style. This is a scholarly work and is very difficult to follow. There are easier books if you want to learn Gaelic. If you're already an expert and want to polish your skills, this is the book for you.

A rather old book (1892), trying to record and theorize on the Gaelic tongue - one assumes before it is likely (didn't happen) to die out. Some of his assumptions regarding origins and uses of words and phrases are interesting and can be entertaining to the learned speaker.

Also, the fact that he justified the effort as a means to reach out to the ignorant Gaels of the Highlands and thus bring them slowly to the English so necessary to the "enlightened" thought of the era.

This book deserves to be on your shelf, or in your kindle, if Gaelic is your native language, or it you're learning it. But don't expect to learn it from this book. There are much newer and better sources available today, to do that.

And it's valuable from the historical context. Enough said.

Definitely not for the beginner; that's me. Describes the nuances, history and pronunciation of vowels, consonances, diphthongs, etc; then goes into parts of speech. I've put this on the back shelf and gone to beginners material. When I've gotten to the point where I can pronounce words and phrases, I'll go back to Alexander Stewart's book because I see it has a lot of value.

Good textbook, very informative. Got it to go with an Amazon App for Gaelic Language. They work together well. I'm ready for St. Patrick's Day.

it's almost impossible to find older Gaelic grammars. It's even hard to find ANY older books on Celtic languages. No wonders they are nearly extinct
