4.0 out of 5 stars For some people, not for others
The author's writing style might not be to everyone's liking. You can get a sense of this would be for you by reading other reviewers (both positive and negative).

Sometimes authors simply don't connect to readers and at a certain point readers just disconnect and even if the book is good, they can't absorb the useful parts of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but I won't be following her advice!
I love yoga, mindful eating, and even fruit. And I am trying to lose a few pounds. I even love walking. Based on the title, I thought I would enjoy the book. I finished it in two days or so, and I was engrossed and interested. But I found myself disagreeing vehemently with some of Mrs. Gross' advice. Perhaps because I have never actually been obese, perhaps because...

This book is more an entertainment type read in my opinion.

If you're looking for more practical advice on how to lose weight, especially from your belly and waistline, I suggest something like The 5-Second Flat Belly Secret - Lose 2-3 Inches from Your Belly in Less Than 1 Month I was able to sculpt a beautiful flat tummy in 5 weeks following that info.

So get this book if you're looking for entertainment (hit or miss depending on whether you'll connect with the author's personality). If you're looking for more practical weight loss and body sculpting advice, find another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Home hitting read!, January 10, 2012

This review is from: enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer (Hardcover)
I read this on two flights in two days, and I couldn't put it down. I think what is so inspiring is that Jessica's journey has been SO REAL. She doesn't sugar coat painful emotions, hard decisions, or make yoga seem easier than it is. I am committed to deepening my practice after reading her insights. Even if its JUST for the yummy recipes, this is a definite GO!

This is a terrific book! I could not put it down. It was inspiring to me as someone who already does yoga and eats well, and I'm sure it'd be most helpful for someone looking to change to a healthier way of life. Very entertaining as well as enlightening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved enLIGHTened, November 22, 2011

Motivation, yoga poses, inspirational quotes to start each chapter, and a great chili recipe. This is just a sampling of what this book has to offer. I recently finished reading enLIGHTened on my kindle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Jessica Berger Gross's colloquial writing style provides a way for the reader to really connect with the author. By the end, you'll feel like you've known her for years. Gross demonstrates how someone can take charge of life's journey, chart his or her own course, and own it. Her thoughts are insightful and personal stories of struggle and success are an inspiration for anyone who is thinking, "how can I change x, y, or z?" The only thing I warn you about is that after reading this book, you may have a serious craving for pineapple. Namaste.

5.0 out of 5 stars EnLOVEDit!, October 30, 2011
This review is from: enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer (Hardcover)
As I was exiting the library, I spied the cute Pippi Longstocking'ish looking girl on the cover of this book and it piqued my curiosity. After all, who doesn't like Pippi Longstocking AND want to lose 40 pounds? I know, right?!! If I may be perfectly honest, I have read so many (did I say, "so many," because what I meant was too many) "self-help" books to no avail *big sigh* Jessica's book was different somehow. I felt like I was on a journey with a girlfriend who really understands just how much life can hurt. Will it change my life? Probably not. But it made me smile....a lot. It also made me feel a little less alone in my pain and it made my heart smile just knowing that one more person made it through to the other side and lived to tell about it. If I lived near Jessica, I'd have her over for coffee aLL ThE tImE! One of the coolest writers I've "met" in a long time.

When you feel like you are "stuck" and have no where to turn, PLEASE get this book! Jessica Berger is able to take you through her journey/life where she unravels all of the hardships she encountered and found solace with yoga and healthy eating habits. This book made me laugh, cry and most importantly gave me hope to transform my life as Jessica did. If you want to be moved by a tale where you can empathize with the author, then you must definitely read this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, May 1, 2010

This review is from: enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer (Hardcover)
Hi, everyone

I purchased this book because I related to the cover: losing weight, yoga and pineaple :)

Well, the book is much more than this. Jessica is very honest and tells her life story and how she came to enlighten her life, facing her personal / family issues. The book also talks about discipline somehow but mainly about living our true selves. And thats what yoga is all about, living your true self because YOU are the most important person under the sun. I really like when she describes the time she spent in Nepal and all the freedom she felt which led up to weight loss and emotional balance.

This is a very significant book and, as you go through the pages, you cant help but look back upon your own life.

I feel lucky I found the book, completely out of the blue - I was just browsing Amazon.com products.

This is a great book!

Jessica Berger Gross occupies that rare space on the bookshelf of writers I want to become and befriend. She can be both funny and very honest about her journey, and her plan for becoming the best and truest version of herself was inspiring. And doable! I mean, who wouldn't want to take a nice long walk, try some yoga, and eat fresh, healthy food? It's a relatable memoir with a sane plan that I'll enjoy reading again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars enlightened, excited, empowered, April 13, 2010

This review is from: enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer (Hardcover)
I just read this entire book at work today-don't tell my boss! I couldn't thank Jessica enough for sharing her story. As a newer mom struggling with some extra weight, but trying not to obsess with it, this book hit home. I have been a vegetarian off & on for the last few years, and ordered this book when I decided to start again after straying off path during my last pregnancy. Jessica reminded me just how important a healthy mindful way of living is for myself, and my family. I've wanted to start a yoga habit for years now, and just never have. Now, I feel like I want to not only take daily classes, but told my girlfriend today that I want to become so in love with it that I can teach it to others some day, even if it's just to my boys at home! I wish I could get my husband to read this book and be on the "same page" as I am, but I'll start by cooking him veg dinners once or twice a week. You can not go wrong by getting and reading this book. I have a feeling this will not be the one & only time I read mine. In the least, it will give you something to really think about-maybe while you're meditating, taking a long walk, or slicing pineapple and cooking lentils!
