In quite environment there is slight noise coming from camera in picture taking mode (noise will cease when in view mode) is this normal? is there a fan?

Check your shooting menu for the autofocus mode. If you have set it to full-time AF rather than single AF, you probably are hearing the camera focusing. Also, in some of the auto modes, the camera will begin focusing even before you have depressed the shutter button. Other than this, I don't hear any sounds coming from mine.

It could also be the vibration reduction, or a problem with the vibration reduction. You could test this by turning it on/off which should be an option.
