My daughter just got one from her grandmother for Christmas and she is 2 years 4 months. It is great! She loves it and actually traces the alphabet on one of the apps. I did download extra learning videos but they are not that much and she plays with it all the time. She turns it on, goes to her stuff and plays what she wants to play. Our only problem is that our daughter is left handed and the attached stylus gets in her way allot but she works through it. Both my husband and I were really surprised at how well she works it but then again she is really good on our phone apps. She does not even play on our phones anymore. :) It's great!
I have one for my two year old and he loves it, after less than a month of using it he has already improved and is able to play the games with no problems. He already knew his alphabet and numbers and just thought he needed a little extra to mess around with.
In my own opinion a 2 year old is a little too early for the LeapPad. The LeapFrog's 'LeapFrog My Own Leaptop' is more appropiate for a 2 year old and much cheaper. We also own the LeapFrog Text and Learn and the LeapFrog Scribble and Write; these toys have been enjoyed by both our children and the younger one 4 years old still has fun playing with them even though already has the LeapPad. I suggest you check the toddler section at leapfrog's website, they have a lot of toys specially designed for young toddlers.
My daughter is 2 years, 5 months & LOVES the Leap Pad 2. She plays with just the apps that came on the Leap Pad & is happy as can be with taking care of pets & watching the Frog video. I think my whole family can sing the Frog song about what each letter of the alphabet makes! Yes, this is an appropriate for a 2 year old.
I just bought the leap pad 2 for my 2 year old son. He takes my iPad, goes to the you tube app and punches the letter T in the search engine and his Thomas and friends video comes up. I think kids now days are little tech wizards lol. That being said even though it's maybe better for a 3 year old , I think my 2 yr old will do just fine. It all comes down to your child .
