Step 1: Hydrate with apricot cuticle oil.

Step 2: Clean then prep nail with an essie base coat or treatment.

Step 3: Apply 2 coats of no place like chrome. let dry.

Step 4: Using licorice and a toothpick or liner brush (found at craft stores), paint a small triangle rising up from the center of your cuticle.

Step 5: Frame the triangle in a half circle.

Tip: Stroke from the left side of the nail across to the right. then, start your next stroke at the right side and brush across to the left to connect the line.

Step 6: Repeat drawing triangles and half-circles up to fill in the rest of your nail. here, there are four, but you only need to paint three rings to get the full skyscraper effect.

Step 7: Fill in any triangles pointing down towards your cuticle with licorice. all that should remain silver are the triangles pointing towards the tip of your nail. let dry.

Step 8: Shine + seal with an essie top coat.

Bryan's Mommy
The color does seem like a very dark, dark gray versus black, but I ended up liking it a lot.

I'm really happy with this polish. I knew exactly what I wanted in a black polish, and for the price, this one comes the closest.

Here are the facts.

What I love: Firstly, Essie Licorice is a very TRUE black, and by that, I mean it's the kind of black that is very obviously black. For the purpose of this review, let's forget the whole "black's not a color, it's a shade" routine. There are many different shades of black, some being blue-, green-, yellow-, and red-based. So sometimes, you might find yourself asking "is this actually black, or is it dark navy blue (or dark brown, charcoal, dark burgundy, deep hunter green, etc.?) So when I say Essie Licorice is a very TRUE black, it means that question never pops into your head. You'll know it's genuine, honest black as soon as the 2nd coat is on (the 1st coat WILL appear brown, but only because this polish needs 2 coats to achieve full opaqueness). To me, the "truest" black is yellow-based black. A yellow undertone only makes black blacker, with no hint of any other color, whereas any other color-based black will just over-power the black and turn it into whatever color the undertone is. That’s why sometimes black things appear a dark blue, brown, charcoal, green, burgundy, etc. Endless story short, Essie Licorice is yellow-based, and it’s good.

Secondly, Essie Licorice is nice and glossy (unlike a certain polish by the brand that rhymes with Schmaybelline, which goes dull and matte after 24 hours). Essie Licorice looks like wet PVC or candy-coated black jewels. A previous reviewer said it’s glossy, but not so glossy as to appear gothic or fetishy. As a goth who likes fetish-inspired accessories, I find this polish to be right up my dark, weird alley.

Perfectly black. You will need 2 coats though to get that perfect black-out look. Paired with Seche Vite top coat and its piano key shiny!

One of the featured colors in Lesson 4 - Dark Mani - with good tips for applying darker polishes in this special issue. This one is classified as a polish rather than a lacquer. They indicate it will dry more quickly - a great seasonal color - love.

This is my favorite nail polish of all time! It's dark, sensual, and even provocative. It sometimes even reminds me of "True Blood" because of the rich dark red color that resembles blood. This is definitely more of a fall/winter color but it can be used all year round if you pair with the right ensemble. I definitely recommend this nail polish and it won't chip as long as you use the right top coat.
