From Library Journal
These chronologically arranged passages from homilies, letters, and sayings of Christendom's first six centuries offer a look at the development of spirituality. We have writings from the New Testament, the Nag Hammadi library, Tertullian and Cyprian, Origen and Clement, the Desert Fathers, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. John Chrysostom, Pseudo-Dionysius, and much more. But mainly this is a fine devotional tool, a fitting concluding volume to the trilogy begun with Book of Earliest Christian Prayers (Macmillan, 1988) and Book of Earliest Christian Hymns ( LJ 11/1/86).-- EC
