Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dragonwagon (The Bean Book, etc.), children's book writer and co-owner of the Dairy Hollow House in Eureka Springs, Ark., where Brown was an innkeeper, offers 400 recipes in the style of "nouveau'zarks" cuisine, a crazy-quilt combination of French haute and nouvelle cuisines, hearty Ozarks country and natural foods cookery. The offerings include Southern favorites like hashed brown quiche, angel biscuits, Savannah peanut butter pie and country-fried chicken with milk gravy. Special attention is devoted to vegetarian dishes, picnic fare, grains and pasta, fruit and chocolate delicacies, pies and cakes, and utilizing regional ingredients. The narrative style is verbose but agreeably enthusiastic; menus are suggested and the tempting recipes are easy to follow, but if readers get stuck they can peruse the glossary or call the authors whose phone number is included. Illustrations not seen by PW. Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book Club alternate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! One of my all-time favorite cookbooks, July 13, 1998
By A Customer
This book is outstanding. The recipes are all tried-and-true, comparatively easy to make, and absolutely wonderful. And each is preceded by a warm, interesting little anecdote -- which a friend once described as "proof that somebody actually ate this". I really love this book, and cannot sufficiently recommend it. (I have all the cookbooks written by this author, and strongly recommend them, as well.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Dairy Hollow House Cookbook, December 22, 2004
My favorite cookbook! These are wholesome, healthy and delicious recipes. This cookbook is loaded with the kinds of foods you prepare for the people you love the most. Warm and witty writing and lucsious recipes make this cookbook a keepsake. This book is a great gift for anyone who loves to entertain and loves to cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best wedding presents I got, June 3, 2009
Got this as a wedding present more than 15 years ago and I still use it all the time. Probably the cookbook I've given as a present the most. Herbed Mezzaluna bread is a great thing; the bean recipes are wonderful, and "The Salad" is astonishingly good.
