Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-This entry in the popular, easy-to-read series offers an excellent overview of the elephant's habits and life cycle. The concise yet informative text focuses on African elephant families, but mentions Asian species. Accurate watercolors (many of which are full page) supplement the information. Brief captions clarify some of the illustrations. L. Martin's Elephants (Rourke, 1988) and Elsa Posell's Elephants (Childrens, 1982) provide similar information in slightly different formats. A list of addresses for organizations dedicated to protecting this endangered species is provided.

From Booklist
Gr. 2-3. From the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out series, this compact book introduces African elephants, emphasizing their family structure and individual and group behavior, including how they care for their young. Dorros also points out the differences between African and Asian elephants and briefly examines the endangerment of elephants because of the ivory trade. While the drawing sometimes seems awkward, the full-color, line-and-wash illustrations effectively illustrate the text. A useful addition to school and public library collections. Carolyn Phelan
