Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Fashion model Paris James has spent her life avoiding commitment. So when she wakes up on the morning of her 30th birthday next to a naked Elvis impersonator who claims to be her new husband, she prays the whole thing is a terrible joke. But her marriage is very real, and "Elvis" turns out to be none other than her best friend from high school, Turner Pruitt, who now works as a singing minister in an Elvis chapel in Las Vegas. Turner has always had a huge crush on the vulnerable Paris, and now that fate and drunken impetuousness have brought them together, he's determined to honor their vows. Paris escapes home to New York, but soon discovers their night of wild passion led to more than just the unwelcome acquisition of a husband. Combining playful absurdity (to the tune of Paris's immense teddy bear collection) with a heartfelt examination of more emotionally weighty issues, MacPherson (In the Mood) succeeds in creating a romance that stands out from the pack. Readers will sigh over Turner's sensitive sexiness and will cheer Paris as she tackles her greatest fears to claim well-deserved happiness.

Product Description

Paris James has come to Las Vegas to take the sting off turning the dreaded "Three-O." But one glass of bubbly leads to another -- and when the redhead wakes up the next morning, she finds to her astonishment she's in bed with ... Elvis! The good news is it's the young, sexy Elvis. The bad news is there's a diamond ring on her finger. Sometime during the evening she actually married The King of Rock 'n' Roll! Well, what happened in Vegas better stay in Vegas, right?

But not if Turner Pruitt has anything to say about it. Because years before he put on his first pair of blue suede shoes, Turner knew the real Paris ... She's running away, as usual, but he knows her deepest secrets, and as much as she struggles against love, Paris is going to need him by her side as she faces her demons head-on.

Because this time, Paris James has met her match.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun without Freaking Out, June 16, 2005
"She Woke Up Married" is an absolutely fantastic book. It takes an absolutely insane and laugh out loud funny storyline about a fashion model who has too much to drink and ends up Vegas married to her former high school friend turned Elvis Impersonator, but then adds in real human issues about relationships. I enjoyed this book like few others. [...]

1.0 out of 5 stars Started off well, but....., September 4, 2007
By Avid Reader (Hammond, LA) - See all my reviews
The beginning was both enjoyable and humorous when Paris, the main character wakes up married to "Elvis." It goes downhill from there, however, because Paris appears selfish and does everything she can to make us not like her. The humor is lost and the ending is predictable, though anticlimactic. The writer should have stayed with the humor and let Paris work out her insecurities in a less dark way.

3.0 out of 5 stars What happens in Vegas... stays in Vegas, January 30, 2006
By Tracy Vest (Northern California) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Aging model Paris awakens in her hotel room the morning after her 30th birthday with a massive hangover and a stud in her bed. She soon discovers that she has eloped with an Elvis-impersonating preacher, who is also a friend from high school. She immediately asks for an annulment and flees to New York.

After a couple weeks to calm down, Turner seeks out his new wife in the Big Apple, just in time to discover that she is pregnant. Paris does not want the child - her own childhood was stolen from her when her mother became severely depressed after the birth of her sister and after a series of tragedies, she ended up alone in a Catholic orphanage. She makes a bargain to carry his baby in exchange for a divorce.

Turner agrees then sets about changing her mind. Returning to Vegas, she moves into his already crowded apartment, which gets a little more crowded when a friend from his parent's island colony comes to stay with them while she finishes up school.

MacPherson's romance novels are usually light fare. This was is a little more dark, as Paris wallows in self-pit as she comes to grips with her past and fears that the sins of the mother will transfer to her. Turner is just too good to be true, considering what a shrew Paris is most of the time. A lesser man would have kicked her out on her Manolo's!
