Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
As more Americans become obese and are diagnosed with diabetes in record numbers, they continue to seek out new sources of healthy living advice and dieting tips. Those frustrated with South Beach, Atkins and the Zone may find a friend in the Rosedale Diet. Its founder, a nutrition and metabolism expert with a practice in Denver, has developed a diet plan that teaches people how to control leptin, the key hormone that regulates appetite and, say Rosedale and coauthor Colman, your ability to lose weight. They present their plan in two parts, first explaining the concept, and then providing advice for putting it into action. The Rosedale Diet encourages consumption of high-fat foods (good fats, of course—and they're to be eaten unaccompanied by sugar-forming foods), and doesn't insist that people count calories. Rosedale recommends supplements, too, asking readers to take 2,000 milligrams of glutamine before going to bed at night, and suggesting pregnenolone and phosphatidylserine for some. Even if readers aren't ready to plunge full-force into the Rosedale Diet, they'll benefit from such recipes as Dilled Salmon with Fresh Asparagus; Lobster Tails and Seaweed Salad; and Grilled Beef Fillet with Bell Pepper and Mashed Rutabagas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthru!!, December 12, 2004
By G. Kerkhoven (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I ate 6 months successfully according to the South Beach Diet (lost 10 kilograms and lots of fat), but suddenly I started to gain wait again, so I tried Phase 1 of Atkins, which worsened my situation; UNTIL I discovered and read the book of Rosedale; he explains why you should eat moderate quantities of protein (which I didn't do of course in Atkins Phase 1 ) ànd you should be careful with "normal" meat, because saturated fat cause a raise in leptin, which causes you to become fatter ànd you should eat LOTS of GOOD fats!! So I started to eat more fish, lots of olives and avocado's, lots of olive oil, nuts and less protein, and miracle oh miracle, I immediately lost fat and weight on the right places, WITHOUT any effort :-))

The key is leptin and Rosedale explain very well what leptin is, which type of food raises your leptin level, why that damages your health and even more important, he explains what you should and shouldn't eat in order to get your leptin in control again, with that comes weight and fat loss VERY EASILY

5.0 out of 5 stars Just addressing some inaccuracies from a prior review, September 26, 2005
By burtie (Portland, OR, United States) - See all my reviews
As they say, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's another thing entirely, however, to misrepresent something with inaccurate half-truths, which is what one reviewer did earlier(specifically, Vergle Wagner's review from December 6, 2004). I can't sit back while this reviewer's carelessness could scare someone off who could really benefit from Dr. Rosedale's knowledge and advice. Here are the points I wish to make:

1. This program can't just be lumped into a "low-carb" category. While Dr. Rosedale's recommended way of eating definitely excludes regularly eating a bunch of sugar and starch (which means most fruits and things like potatoes and corn), it isn't about avoiding carbohydrates - or all fruits and vegetables - altogether. That's a main reason why this is NOT the same as Adkins. Dr. Rosedale insists people eat carbohydrates that are high in fiber - in other words, vegetables! And blueberries, too, which - last time I checked - are considered fruit.
2. It is the food sources, not supplements, that are emphasized as primary sources for nutrients. Dr. Rosedale makes recommendations on supplements that can be used. They are RECOMMENDATIONS, not requirements. It's right there in the book.
3. Leptin and insulin are BOTH hormones. Leptin has only been recently discovered (in 1994). When Dr. Rosedale talks about leptin, he is not trying to "pitch" any new idea that is really talking about insulin. Leptin and insulin are two different hormones that are BOTH an integral part of the metabolic process and they must BOTH be addressed if a person is to truly help their body work more efficiently.

This program is the best thing that's come along to help people suffering from obesity and diseases caused by hormone imbalances. I'm taking the time to write this review because for the first time since I gained weight, I have renewed hope. I'm someone who didn't grow up fat, but gained 100 pounds in spite of exercising 5 days a week and experimenting with vegetarianism, veganism and working with a nutritionist. I also found out I have several reproductive problems that are hormone related (which is what led me to this book in the first place). I believe in this program - it has given me hope that I will get back to my normal size and reverse some of the problems caused by my whacked out hormones. On an even greater note, it is my sincere hope that as information on leptin and insulin resistence becomes more readily available to the public, more people will learn about the complexity of obesity and stop treating people who are overweight as ignorant, lazy or worthless. In any case, I hope my rant at least compels you to read the book (heck, I checked it out at the library first!) and judge for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Miracle, October 24, 2004
By Leelioux (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
My mother sent me this book and I received it 2 weeks ago. I began the plan last Friday and have lost 8lbs in the first week. I have a long way to go, but my constant hunger is GONE. I don't think about food 24/7, and when I eat, it doesn't take much to satisfy me and I just stop when I reach that point. This plan is so easy, and I don't have to cut out my favorite foods, so I know this is something that I'll stick to for the rest of my life. I feel like for the first time in my life, food has no power over me anymore. I realized yesterday that I haven't had chocolate in a week, but more astounding to me, I haven't THOUGHT about chocolate in a week! Coming from a chocoholic, that's pretty incredible. I feel great, have plenty of energy, and didn't go through any "withdrawls" like I used ot when I'd do just a low-carb diet. I recommend this to anyone who has struggled with their weight and has tried everything else. This really does work. Thank you Dr. Rosedale! My mother put it best - Why didn't anyone write this book 30 years ago?
