With red herrings this fishy, how come Kane's brainy heroic lovers don't figure out the psychopathic stalker's identity until almost too late? That's the real enigma in Kane's hardcover romantic suspense debut. When gorgeous psychologist and talk show host Taylor Halstead goes to bed with gorgeous attorney Reed Watson, Kane (Run for Your Life, etc.) is in her element: "He was naked. She could feel every incredible inch of him, hot and hard and desperate to get inside her." The writer is a pro in the romance department, offering ample tenderness and lubricity, and the details of the talk show world are well researched and convincing. But the suspense plot relies on the predictable and improbable. The book opens with a brutal near-rape scene involving Taylor and her cousin's gorgeous but evil boyfriend, Gordon Mallory. Kane seems to dispose of Gordon (along with Taylor's beloved cousin) in a yacht explosion, only to introduce his egregious identical twin, Jonathan, several pages later. Among other unconvincing developments, the twins turn out to be their rich dad's illegitimate sons and one was repeatedly molested by their stepmother. Who's stalking Taylor? Is it Jonathan? No, it's got to be Gordon, right? But wasn't he dead? Where's he hiding? Thank goodness for the steamy sex, because the answers don't hold water.

Taylor Halstead has made a successful career for herself by counseling others, either at an elite New York prep school or through her radio talk show, but when her safety is threatened by her cousin's boyfriend, Gordon, she feels helpless. He attempts to rape her, then both he and her cousin are killed in a boating accident. Months later, Taylor receives an e-mail that quotes Gordon's last words to her, followed by ominous phone calls. But the worst thing she encounters is Gordon's twin, Jonathan, who seems to have an unnatural attraction to her. She meets Jonathan at the lawyer's office as she is settling her cousin's estate. The lawyer, Reed Weston, is also taken by the beautiful Taylor and tries to help her by teaching her the rudiments of self-defense, and inveigling his way into her life, and her heart. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. This book had a great mystery. Kept you on the edge of your seat wondering who was really doing what. Just when you though you had it, you got thrown by some other factor that just pops up. It had me until the end, and that was a damn good twist. No wonder I couldnt figure it all out. As the story goes deeper and deeper, more pieces fall together. Not enough to figure out the whole mystery, though. The author did a great job of stringing the reader along.
As far as romance in this novel, well, there is not much. Yes, we have the two main characters who are "together" but not much attention is really drawn to it. This is a book where romance takes a backseat to the mystery and suspence. Not what I look for, I go for the ones where the mystery and romance are as equal as possible. But overall it was a good read. The mystery part of this book is awesome. There are all kinds of twists to the plot. But there is almost nothing to contribute to the romance part of it. There is one love scene and that is not that great and the rest are left to your imagination. The couple also had an almost phony feel to it. I cant put my finger on it, but some of their interactions were missing something I think.
For mystery readers and those who like suspence to keep you on the edge of your seat, this is so for you. But dont get this thinking it is along the lines of older Linda Howard for example. Its not. I gave the book four stars because the mystery was so good. The romance part just falls under my personal preference. Dosent change the fact that this is a great suspence thriller.

I admit to being a HUGE Andrea Kane fan from way back. I fell in love with her historical romances (Samantha was the first I'd ever read) and admit to being somewhat apprehensive when I found out that she was changing genres. How could she do that to me I asked? Well, I truly had nothing to fear as her romantic suspense efforts have proven to be getting better and better and this book is no exception.

Without going into a detailed synopsis (this could give away some key aspects of the suspense and than possibly ruining the read for some) suffice it to say that Ms. Kane took extreme care in setting up and executing her storyline. Characters a key and important part of any story are wonderfully dynamic. Taylor and Reed the romantic leads in this page turning story are wonderful complements to each other. Not only were they likable characters, I truly cared about how their romance was going to develop and in which direction it would go.

Although readers may divine who the killer is early on in the story this in no way hurts this read. I must admit to guessing right up to the unveiling. I'm sure fellow readers will be totally caught up in Ms. Kane's latest effort. This is one author that I highly recommend and suggest that you not only check out this read, but her backlist as well.

This was a very good read from start to finish. The characters were interesting, the plot well developed, and there's a nice unexpected twist at the end (though most people could probably figure it out if they were really paying attention). This book works well as both a romance and a thriller, and the author has done sufficient research to lend authenticity to the radio station, police work, and psychological aspects of the book.

Well done and highly recommended!
