Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Jackman's compendium of American foods and foodstuffs is an informational tour-de-force, a guidebook suitable for everyone from the couch potato to the frequent flyer. In the interest of finding out where to get the best, whether it's organic produce or fast food, delivery or fine dining, the author has eaten widely if not always well. Wondered when your favorite ready-to-eat cereal hit the market? What a runza is? Where to go for your last meal on earth? Jackman, who was the managing director of the Modern Library and coauthor of Stickin', includes all the foods and facts, from coast to coast (and including Alaska and Hawaii). The book is organized about as well as something so wide-ranging can be without tilting into a work of reference. The first part, Eating In, isn't a how-to-eat-better so much as a how-to-eat-the-best-possible. Its second, larger part, Eating Out, might make one want to cash in an IRA and hit the road for a year or two to eat everything he's listed. Readers will soon find themselves flipping the pages from restaurant to dish, and that's when they'll start fingering their car keys—it's just the thing for the summer travel season. (July)

5.0 out of 5 stars gourmet and grease heaven, July 10, 2007
A fantastic book. It makes you want to give up the gym and the sensible eating and just eat everything you can get your greasy hands on; the best lobster rolls in maine, key lime pie in florida, and burgers everywhere.
It also tells you how to have all this amazing food delivered right to your door, making it even easier to become a true couch potato.
my only beef is that it doesn't mention the bacon egg and cheese and the yankee doodle in new haven, two of those and your hangover is just a distant memory, maybe it will make it into the next edition
In the meantime, if you take your food serious, EAT THIS

5.0 out of 5 stars If de Tocqueville were traveling America today..., August 6, 2007
...and he was hungry, he very well might have written this charming book. A celebration of that spot in town that only the locals know about, this book is a light footed tour through the places that will never be included in the Michelin guide, but should not be missed at all costs.

Written with a great eye (and ear, nose, and tongue) for detail, lovers of "real food" everywhere will find this book a very satisfying read. Finally, a food book that understands that a super omelet or a perfect pizza is just as important to understanding great food as a fancy 3-star meal.
