Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Flawed Rev. Curtis Black returns in Roby's latest melodrama (following Love and Lies). The repentant, 46-year-old Curtis has finally made amends with his 31-year-old wife, Charlotte: she's forgiven him for his five-year affair with Tabitha, but forbids him from seeing Tabitha or the infant daughter he fathered with her. An enraged Tabitha harasses Curtis, stalks Charlotte around their hometown of Mitchell, Ill., and threatens to go public. Haunted by her own daughter's death and determined to keep her husband's secrets, Charlotte decides to take matters into her own hands. Meanwhile, interim pastor Rev. Tolson, who knows a thing or two about Curtis's business, is smarting from his loss of power now that Curtis has returned to the pulpit from a book tour and speaking engagements. And Curtis and Charlotte risk losing their 13-year-old son, Matthew, after David, the man they believe is Matthew's biological dad, decides to seek full custody. Roby has got smalltown church politics down, but spends more time on stiffly repeated backstory and hollow finger-wagging than on plot, leading to a hurried, undermotivated denouement.

Review

"Bravo for narrator Tracey Leigh, whose strong performance hooks the listener on this soap opera-like novel. ... Leigh beautifully characterizes children and adults and expertly portrays Janine's abusive boyfriend. She brings to life the full range of emotions experienced by the large cast of characters..." -- AudioFile on Love & Lies --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS......, January 29, 2008
By Dana Y. Bowles "DYB" (West Chester, PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Reverend Curtis Black is back, and seemingly on his very best behavior. So while Curtis is not creating any new drama, he doesn't have to; there is enough residual old drama from his past to pack this storyline chock-full of the usual Black nonsense. Ex-mistress Tabitha Charles has given birth to the good Reverend's love child....and wife Charlotte is furious. She has forbidden Curtis from having anything to do with baby Curtina; and Curtis is struggling with abiding by his wife's wishes and his need to be a father to his child...whatever the circumstances. To add to the confusion, David, Charlotte's ex-lover and the father of her son Matthew, has just become aware that he has a son and is determined to become a part of Matthew's life. When visitation does not work out to his liking, he threatens to take Charlotte and Curtis to court for full custody of Matthew. And the drama does not end there.....
I have always been a fan of this series, but this book just seemed to me to be somewhat repetitious. How much more can we take of this churchgoing couple? Trues fans of the Curtis Black series will not want to miss this one...but there is nothing creative or standout about this novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Time to End the Curtis Black Saga, February 5, 2008
Roby is an excellent writer and her work is well-edited. She does a great job revealing the consequences of affairs and infidelity, such as illigetimate children and medical issues. However, it is definitely time to end the Curtis Black drama. Black's character has been drawn out long enough. This would be a good time to end the series. If not, it would definitely be overkill. Nonetheless, I did enjoy reading the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's Done in the Dark............., June 10, 2008
Pastor Curtis Black was back and ready for a new beginning in Sin No More by Kimberla Lawson Roby. He had been ousted from two previous churches because of his philandering ways. Pastor Black brought shame to the body of Christ, his family and himself. No more lies, no more cheating, he was a new man and he was determined to get it right.

He started a new church with, his wife, Charlotte, and she and his son, Matthew, were still standing by his side. Curtis was a new man, redeemed from his past, but the consequences of his sins have come back to haunt him. Tabitha, Curtis' former lover and their baby girl, Curtina, who was conceived in sin were back. If that was not enough, there was an enemy in the camp who was trying to put him out of his own church.

Tabitha was coming to get what she thought belonged to her, and married or not Curtis Black was going to be hers. Tabitha still loved Curtis and was ready to use baby Curtina as her weapon of power in order to have her man. Tabitha was ready for the battle, but she was not at all prepared for the war and bit off more than she could chew by provoking Charlotte and trying to destroy the man of God.

Charlotte was a woman scorned more than once, and this was the last straw. She was determined to keep Curtis away from Tabitha and Curtina if she had to die in the process. At times, she wished she would have divorced Curtis when she found out about Curtina. She could not allow that child into her house or family and it was up to her to find a way to keep her out. Charlotte had a few secrets and misdeeds of her own, and as she tried to keep them covered and placed blame on Curtis, the love and trust that God was in the process of resurrecting in their marriage was on the verge of being put asunder by man and dirty deeds.

It was a great book; I could barely put it down and I was done with it too quickly. I could relate to the storyline and it was too real for me. It is an excellent read! It is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, but truly is exemplary of our God and how he cannot be mocked. I highly recommend this book to all who would like to see how all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.
