Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Claiming that the popular cholesterol-reducing diets are severely restrictive, yield unremarkable results or prescribe drugs that produce adverse side effects, Kowalski, a medical journalist who suffers from heart disease, developed a palatable alternative, which, he asserts, reduced the cholesterol level in his bloodstream by 40% in a short period of time. His program combines a modified diet (red meat is allowed in moderation), and daily doses of oat bran and the B-vitamin niacin. Kowalski elucidates the complex terminology of cholesterol and other bloodstream lipids, and aptly demonstrates how oat bran and niacin lower cholesterol and, in turn, that cholesterol lowering can be instrumental in reducing the incidence of heart disease. Roundups of foods least likely to bring about a cholesterol excess, as well as those with special properties that lower cholesterol, are particularly helpful, as are suggestions for substituting oat bran in traditional recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kowalski is not kidding., July 1, 1999
By A Customer
I had no desire to take pharmaceuticals to lower my cholesterol, since they seem tailored to "stabilize the plaque" which has already deposited-out in the arteries of people with high cholesterol, as well as to lower the levels of cholesterol. My desire was to lower the levels, yes, but also to dissolve-away the deposits, if any, and not to put a hard coating on them. The Niacin and Oat Bran regimen that Kowalsky writes about is good to find out about because it can have these effects that I desired. I started with a Total cholesterol level of 288, and in 120 days it measured 161 at the same lab. This is a diminution of 44%! And the ratio went from 50% over "dangerous" to 50% over "protective." Triglycerides went from 209 down to 97. I am pleased as punch. This treatment is so simple and so inexpensive that one wishes to evangelize for it. I believe this book could save many lives; I would like to give it as a little gift to friends who have elevated levels, and whom I would like to keep as friends for many more decades. Best wishes to all readers! Try it, with your doctor's consultation: you may like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's real thing!, September 7, 1999
By trachook@cscoms.com (Bangkok , Thailand) - See all my reviews
It's real thing. I read it immediately after I knew my blood cholesterol was at 274. Only 2 months , it is now at 202. The physician didn't believe the outstanding reduced figure. The book not only teach us how to set a dish , but more importantly how to set your mind to act as vital part to help your body fight against the temptation of your prefered dangerous type of food. And it teachs us that reducing cholesterol is not a kind of punishment but it's a easy kind of achievement that everyone of us will be proud of and want to let everyone in the world to know that you can do it , just like I do now. 4.0 out of 5 stars It really works, November 13, 2000
I am like many. My cholesterol was 274 and my doctor wanted to put me on Lipitor. I told him I wanted to try to lower it with my diet. He gave me 3 months. I read the 8-week Cholesterol Cure and 3 months later I am at 176 from the same lab. I didn't like the idea of taking niacin so I didn't and lowered my cholesterol just by eating the proper foods. I used to eat fast foods and bakery and everything that was wrong. Stay away from the fat and eat the oat bran and fish and olive oil and turkey and chicken breast and everything spelled out in the book and the cholesterol will come down. I also lost 15 pounds in the process. The best part is I like what I eat and I am not deprived. Thank you- it worked for me.
