This is the start of another great series from Mr. Allen. I truly enjoy the new characters in this book and look forward to many adventures in the books to come. Every character, it seems, could have a book of his or her own; especially Katarina. I highly recommend this book but be careful as you'll want to purchase the next one. Unfortunately, Mr. Allen has a new book contract so his book prices have gone up tremendously (doubled). Mr. Allen's writing is as good as ever so I don't see what he new contract provides other than higher prices. For book two, the kindle price in more that the paperback price. Since Mr. Allen started with us Kindle readers (and other ebooks), it seems that they've forgotten the folks that got them started. I love Jay Allen's stories (books) but I feel that I'm being taken advantage of with the new pricing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new offering from Jay Allan - it is just as good, if not better than the Crimson Worlds series (and I like the CW novels a lot). The Far Stars series centers on the main character, Arkarin Blackhawk and the crew of Wolf's Claw - a bunch of disruputable smugglers and mercinaries. In book one he and his crew have been hired by Blackhawk's friend Marshal Augustin Lucerne of Celtiboria to find his daughter who has been kidnapped by the pirates of Kilishar. However, there is more to this novel than finding a friend's kidnapped daughter. Interwoven into this exciting novel is a wider plot, promulgated by the Empire to bring the Far Stars into it's sphere of influence.
The Far Stars is a collection of human worlds that are on the fringe of the Empire; they are fiercely independent, but are often dogged by ineffective governments run by warlords, hounded by the pirates of Kilishar, and are thus not united into a singular entity. Enter, imperial governor Vos who plans to use the disunity found amongst the Far Stars Worlds to undermine existing governments through the subtle and unscrupulous methods of his spies and bring them ultimately under Imperial control. On the whole I found that the Far Stars had a nice balance between action and character development; the novel itself is gritty - a Jay Allan trade-mark and it delves into themes of power, the indiscriminate and ugly nature of war, the power of hope and friendship and unity amongst comrades in arms. So looking forward to the next book to find out what happens to Blackhawk, his crew and the Far Stars worlds.

I'm enjoying this spin-off series quite a bit. It could end up requiring a lot of books to fully play out this story line, but I'm hoping it's only 4 or 5.

This particular book was a good second installment that actually revealed some significant information about the First Imperium, including some big surprises.

First I will say I really love Jay Allan's total works. This is a new series and as such has new characters, places, names, etc. The story is slower than some of the Crimson Worlds novels because of all the newness. It is still first rate writing and I will read the rest of the trilogy with gusto. If you liked any of Jay's other works, you will enjoy this book! Can't wait for the finish!!

Jay Allen does it again with a new swash-buckling pirate crew.in a new series of space adventures. Interesting and varied characters.
He left lots of room and hints about future exposition of the crew members' back stories.
If you likes his previous series', you 'll love this one. can't wait for the sequel.

The story line is great and the main characters are well defined. But there is very little new or distinctive f r ok most Sci-Fi novels. Love between the leader (captain) and the lady (person being rescued), and a typical crew loyal to each other. Typical story in any simple novel. Action is predictable..

CONTAINS SPOILER (but nothing surprising)

I'm very sad but I feel like giving this book only 3 stars because of the following reasons:

- descriptions of characters that are "good" are mentioned again and again.
I'm very bad at remembering names of people, but come on - mentioning at least 3 or 4 times throughout the book that the great-looking lady is an assassin trained to bring sneakyness to a new level, or that the techy-girl can fix anything, etc... is too much even for me.
On the other side the stuff related to the "bad" guys was much better: background infos and personal feelings/thoughts mentioned only when needed by the situation.
Therefore for me painful to read - started speedreading after 75% of the book because I didn't want to waste my time (Having now the feeling that the book could be compacted to at least 50%).
I will definitely not read this book again => -1 star

- time structure
Maybe its' my fault - in my case I really did not understand the X days difference between the (almost linear) parts of the story.
E.g. I understood that at a certain point somebody needs 1 (up to 3 days if I misunderstood) to enter orbit and land on a planet, but I cannot believe it if they have the advanced tech and basically unlimited fuel that they have.

- feeling "empty" at the end of the book
I really really like the characters of the book (exactly what I would personally expect on such a "dedicated" pirate ship) and the reason they're on the ship (well described), but throughout the book the characters did not describe any particular challenge they had.
