I have just finished up Enemy In the Dark, book 2 in the Far Stars Trilogy, and I have to say I enjoyed it enormously - can't wait for book 3 to come out in January (actually wish it was right now). In Enemy in the Dark, Imperial Governor Vos continues with his plan to undermine the economy of the worlds that make up the Far Stars, including slowly accumulating enough shares in the Far Stars Bank for a take over. His agents continue to provide advanced Imperial weapons to a number of worlds in order to make Celtiborian President Augustin Lucerne's dreams of a Far Stars Confederation encounter resistance that will severely diminish his military and naval forces. Meanwhile, on a job for the Far Stars Bank, Arkarin Blackhawk and his crew encounter Imperial advanced weapons in the hands of a local revolutionary group on the world of Castilla. After his previous encounter on Saragossa (see book one), Ark grows suspicious that Imperial weapons in the hands of local revolutionaries can't be a coincidence. He takes his suspicions to Augustin Lucerne who asks him to go first to Rykara (Celtiborian forces are trying to subdue the planet in order to bring them into the Confederation) to investigate possible Imperial involvement and find proof and then later Ark goes to Nordlingen where Lucerne's forces are also encountering usage of Imperial weaponary. I really like the setting and plotting of Jay Allan's Far Star Trilogy - something of a departure from his Portal Wars and Crimson Worlds books. He has written a book that is very exciting, has a well thought out and detailed plot with plenty of intrigue thrown in with some great action sequences and dueling sword and knife battles, well-developed characters and you've got yourself one heck of an adventure/military/space opera. Absolutely hanging out for the next book just so I can see how it going to finish up.

Arkarin Blackhawk and crew while on a job to pickup a person wanted by the Far Stars Bank runs finds advanced weapons on a planet that should not have them. Augustin Lucerne has an army on multiple worlds to bring the into the new confederation, but they too are running in to much stronger defenses than they expected. Advanced weapons, that the planets should not have. And the all lead Blackhawk to one conclusion, the Empire. But he needs proof. But proof is hard to come by when the enemy leaves no loose ends. But when Blackhawk rescues a King on one of the worlds and runs in to someone he used to know, his feeling that the Empire is sticking it's nose in to Far Stars is confirmed and the imperial governor has many planes in play. Plans to turn those that should be allies in to enemies. This leads two of the most powerful planets in the Far Stars to a head to head confrontation and Blackhawk to fight off those that wish to collect the 1 million credit bounty on his head. And unfortunately for Blackhawk, not all of his crew will walk away when the smoke clears.

This is a must read series.

Not as fun as his other works. Has a firefly feel to it only not as good.
