Book one of the Sorcery Ascendant was a fantastic debut. We are introduced to Caldan who starts off a naive self centered child but who develops over the course of the story into a mature, poised, intelligent, resourceful hero. You enjoy reading this development as he explores the intricacies of a new magic while discovering aspects unique to himself.

It is then with disappointment that you read this second book and all that character development is seemingly thrown out the window. Instead the reader has to deal with Caldan as an immature, obnoxious, entitled brat who worst of all is incompetent, failing at most things he does and then wallowing in disgusting emo moments of self pity and reprobation. It is with almost horror as you turn each page of the book hoping Caldan would snap out of it and return to demonstrating his moments of brilliance from the 1st book. But instead as the pages dwindle he continues to engage constant moral and action failings that have you putting down the book in frustration. Rather than creating new engineering marvels or discovering new aspects of magic or demonstrating his mastery of Dominion as he did in the first book, he spends every page mewling over a lost love and generally failing at every endeavor while wallowing in indignation and self pity.
He is a pawn to every side character introduced rather than a budding hero in his own right. Even the side character Amerdan comments that Caldan is useless especially when compared to Bells.
Is in fact in Bells and Amerdan that the author lavishes the accomplishment and development.

I want to start this by saying, I am going to by the next book. My low ranking is not a troll. I really was hoping for a much better book. The author definitely can write. He has the potential to be on the level of Abercrombie, Lynch, and Rothfuss. In fact, I had thought of Hogan being much like Rothfuss. Just like the Name of the Wind, Hogan's first book had very little action but played the intelligence and craftiness of the main character. I love the book because it went into depth about a very classical magical system. I found it a relief to find someone making use of much of the magic that anyone familiar with classic fantasy can identify - scrolls, enchanted items, spells, etc. And the character development was great. Most of that is lost on the second book.

To his credit, he seemed to figure out how to add more action. But the failing is in the protagonist. In the end, the character is ridiculously inconsistent. On the one hand he is a great mind - quick wit, quick intelligence. But somehow he is only this way when he plays a chess like game. In that game he can see 40 moves ahead of his opponent. However, in every other aspect of the book a he is an idiot. Worse off, he is a bumbling idiot. He has no charisma. He can't even convince a few city guards that he is a good guy. And don't get me wrong, the author is trying to make him seem naive, that's clear. His background calls for it to some degree. But I'm reminded of that scene in Tropical Thunder, "Everybody knows you never go full retard". Not with your protagonist at least. I mean I've never read a book with multiple threads where I actually wanted to skip the main characters thread. But it is hard to Cadyn make the same mistakes over and over. How many times can he walk into traps.

Engaging plot, creative and unique worldbuilding, really the only thing holding it back is the level of writing. The prose never quite reaches that level of effortlessness and facility that grabs you and makes you want to read the next sentence regardless of the subject matter.

Its a big book and a good one. The plot grows and we get to see some character growth. There is shadowy intrigue, more and new magic to learn, betrayal and heroism and a struggle against all odds.

That was the good part.

The not so good part is that this story is essentially three story lines that don't really interweave very well. I wanted to follow Cadel and while the intelligence lady was fun I really could have done without Aiden and his group. I know they're going to be important later on but I found myself skimming pages when I was reading them and that's something I don't generally tend to do.

On the whole it was an enjoyable book.

Book 2 opens to another cliché of the fantasy genre, the travel story. . . we walked, we shared witty and inane banter, we camped, we whined and worried about or fate, we slept, repeat with no real purpose or story progression. finally we make it to a destination.
More storylines this become a bit clearer with one exception. Why is Caldan such a twit? here is a guy with obvious power but he lets everyone drag him about by his nose hairs. Do this! ok. Do that! ok.
I really only care about your blood and what it can do for me. Ok, here have some more.
Oooh I killed a big time baddy with the help of a guy that I know betrayed me previously. Not only do I give up the treasure trove of potential power but I will also let the guy escape and keep mum about his involvement. All while failing to help my love interest which is my primary goal.
Rubbish. Take the trainers off already, Hogan! I know it's your story but give the guy some stones.
The story ends with our guy saving the day and he is taken prisoner once again and now he is told that he must prove himself again.

I feel that some writer intentionally make their stories frustrating to read. where as they require the protagonist to overcome so many obstacles, before moving the story along, that I as a reader often just stop reading the story for months or years before going back to the story. Fortunately I was able to make it through this one and luckily the next one won't be out for a while. This will give me time to forget the shortcomings and remember the gold nuggets under the silt.
