Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Annie Bananie is one of a kind. Along with her best friend and pet porcupine, Annie Bananie terrorizes the neighborhood, swings from the clothesline, and is transformed from Ann from outer space to the lovely Princess Annie Ba-nanie. So when this redheaded live wire has to move, her best friend is completely bereft: "Annie Bananie, / Do you think it's good / Leaving your whole neighborhood?... How can you just go away? / What about my sixth birthday?" Bravely, her friend tries to make the best of the situation, encouraging Annie Bananie to make new friends and try to write. But most importantly, she wants Annie Bananie to remember that she will "never ever ever / Never ever / Ever / Never / find another friend like me."

Sweet and outrageously silly, Annie Bananie addresses that most woeful of childhood experiences--the loss of a best friend to another town. With just the right balance of lightness and sorrow--and Laura Cornell's enchanting illustrations of the rough-and-tumble pair--this warm, colorful book deserves a spot on every child's shelf. Leah Komaiko (along with illustrator Abby Carter) is the author of several other books about the inimitable Annie Bananie, including Annie Bananie and the Pain Sisters. Laura Cornell is the bestselling illustrator of Jamie Lee Curtis's Where Do Balloons Go? and other popular titles. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Two kooky friends celebrate the good times until one of them moves away, but Komaiko's bouncing verse and Cornell's zany pictures prove that separations don't have to mean good-bye. Ages 4-8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best children's book ever!, June 9, 2002
By Katie (Seffner, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Annie Bananie (Hardcover)
My mother purchased this book for me when I was four years old to help during the transition of moving, and leaving my best friend behind. Now that I am almost 17 it continues to be my favorite children's book. It pocesses the central idea of the innocence of a childhood friendships and how important friendships are in general. I feel this story also reveals a unique element of hope that exists inside everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to ease the hurt of moving for young child, January 30, 1999
By A Customer
An excellent book about a young girl, who is moving away, and her best friend, who is trying to deal with it. Author, Leah Komaiko, captures the saddness and fears that young children face when a good friend moves to another town. The illustrations also are spectacular. Laura Cornell briliantly helps tell the tale through her beautiful illustrations. A wonderful edition to any child's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bookmobile best seller, May 4, 2004

This review is from: Annie Bananie (Turtleback)
Annie Bananie is the narrator's best friend. They have wild times together, parading around dressed up as queens and tickling bumblebees. But Annie is moving away, and the narrator mourns her departure by reminding her of all the good times they've had together. This is a funny, yet sad story of a kind loss that many kids must face at a young age when they are just making friends for the first time. It is a best seller on the local bookmobile. It has about 200 words.
