Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
This engrossing, startlingly detailed biography of a Mafia don is based on material obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Carlos Marcello's rise from street thug to undisputed boss of the oldest Mafia family in the country, and his subsequent reign over a vast criminal empire in the Gulf States, is superbly narrated. His 50-year career in crime ended in 1983 after the FBI nailed him in the largest undercover operation ever mounted against an individual. Davis ( The Kennedys , etc.) also presents a well-organized summary of the large body of circumstantial evidence pointing to Marcello as mastermind of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The material indicates that the authorities were virtually powerless to cope with the conspiracy because several politicians and law enforcement officials at local, state and federal levels had been compromised in their dealings with Marcello and his associates. According to evidence offered in these pages, the Mafia chieftain had two compelling motives: revenge and self-protection. Attorney General Robert Kennedy had not only offended his Sicilian pride in a very personal way, but was threatening to put him and his operation out of business. Photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars G-R-E-A-T BOOK, April 7, 2003
By "joe_r116" (Daly City, CA USA) - See all my reviews
John H. Davis doesn't leave a stone unturned, at least as far as Carlos Marcello's complicity in the assassination. If, after reading this book, you don't think Marcello played a part in this crime, ... This book puts you right into the world of Carlos Marcello, almost as though you were experiencing it with your own eyes. Also impressive was Davis' insight into the wacky world of the U.S. Government. In the years since this book was first published, it has been even further established from numerous informants that the actual shooters were three Corsican underworld hitmen from Marseille: Lucien Sarti, Francois Chiappe, and Jean-Paul Angeletti. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MOST DEFINITIVE WORK ON CARLOS MARCELLO, September 7, 1997
By Tony Page "Tony Page" (Tony Page, Glen Burnie, MD) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having known the Marcello brothers and "others" mentioned in this book very well, it is obvious that Mr. Davis has done his "homework" beyond the "norm"!!! Extremely well written, factual and precise. Have provided many copies to mutual friends. Hoping to see re-print shortly, as I do not have a copy for myself any longer. Hard-cover version would be much more preferable. Outstanding book that I would recommend to anyone, whether or not, familiar with Marcello. Fascinating reading!!! A job "WELL DONE", Mr. Davis!!!!!!!!!!!!!
