Product Description

Asserting that a flight certificate is a pilot's ``license to learn,'' this unique book offers valuable lessons learned by veteran pilots. Using the anecdotal style that has made his Flying magazine column so popular, Fried bridges the gap between pilot training and in-flight experience with his advice on vital but often under-emphasized areas of: maneuvering speed; weight and balance; aircraft control; prop safety; night flying; altitude.

From the Back Cover

Benefit from the Experience of Hundreds of Pilots Howard Fried, legendary flight instructor, shares what every pilot--the experienced as well as the newly minted aviator--most needs to know about flying: the invaluable lessons learned by trial and error, recounted through real-life experiences of hundreds of pilots. Everyone knows that a successful checkride just earns you the ``license to learn.'' To be a truly proficient aviator, there is much more to master, Fried covers it all: Basics that are rarely taught; Mastering maneuvers; Surviving spins and stalls; Pilot error: the human factor; Advanced equipment; Dangerous weather; The ATC system; and a great deal more. Like an old-timer telling war stories in the hangar, Fried makes his points with vivid anecdotes collected from more than 50 years' cumulative experience as a pilot and flight instructor. Why not learn from other people's mistakes? Fried asks. It is much easier, and safer, than making them yourself. It could even save your life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really learned a lot!, November 9, 1998
By A Customer
I am a pretty new private pilot and the title grabbed my attention. I read and enjoyed the vast majority of the content and gained valuable insight from a definite pro. Mr. Fried's writing style is very informal (almost too much so) and I finished the book in two days. This book is for anyone who is interested in improving their understanding of important concepts that may have been only briefly touched on during their training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ! All the flying wisdom packed into this is worth more., September 6, 1998
By esb@home.com (West Hartford, CT) - See all my reviews
A collection of essays and snippets that contain experiences and wisdom not easily found elsewhere. Can be read in any order(chapter). What bothered me was the subtitle - 'What your Flight Instructor never taught you'; so I had to leave it in the car or home. Couldn't bring it into flight school :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, full of common sense, September 11, 1999
By A Customer
Beyond The Checkride (What your instructor never taught you) Once I began reading. I completed the book the same day. Although I am a new pilot, (250 hrs) I believe any pilot would gain new insights from Howards common sense, tell it like it is approach.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, but mostly anecdotal
Not a lot of depth or specific vision in the stories. A fun read, but doesn't quite live up to it's controversial name.
