The ASTD Trainer’s Sourcebook: Diversity is based on my experience as a training and OD professional thrust into the potentially volatile position of stewarding a nationwide diversity initiative for a large corporation. Very few appropriate resources were available when I began this work in the late 1980s, and is true even today. Many approaches focused on differences or “white male bashing”—thereby dividing rather than uniting people. Others were just repackaged affirmative action training. Even worse, some focused on “what women want in the workplace” or “how to relate to African-Americans,” which actually reinforced stereotypes rather than overcoming them. Or, the theories seemed good on paper but fell flat in the real world.

The ASTD Trainer’s Sourcebook: Diversity is based on my experience as a training and OD professional thrust into the potentially volatile position of stewarding a nationwide diversity initiative for a large corporation. It produced such beneficial results that McGraw-Hill and the American Society of Training and Development asked me if they could publish it.
