Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
If you want to exploit SAP's reporting capabilities to the fullest, you need to utilize SAPscript--the software suite's built-in word processing facility. SAPscript illustrates how to use this component in conjunction with SAP's ABAP/4 programming language to produce formatted text.

The book begins with an "Overview" chapter that explains the basic concepts of SAPscript, layout sets, and ABAP programming. This chapter frames the challenges and defines key terminology. In the next chapter, entitled "Architecture," author Michaelson Buchanan goes a bit deeper, explaining how forms and code interact and providing details on how to work with layout sets and code. Dense quantities of screen shots illustrate most points and help keep you on track if you're new to these concepts.

Next the author shows how ABAP code can call layout sets with example programs and commentary. The following chapter details the components of layout sets, again with plenty of screen shots. Then it's on to a discussion of the built-in tools such as the debugger and Include Utilities.

With all this technical discussion under the bridge, the author presents two key tutorials: "Making Changes to an Existing Layout Set" and "Changing an ABAP Report." The book concludes with a command reference of SAPscript control commands and formatting options. A companion CD-ROM contains source code examples to aid your study. If you are aware of the text-output challenges of SAP, chances are you can use this book. --Stephen Plain

Product Description
Here is the very first guide to SAPscript--the architecture that runs the ABAP/4 program. SAPscript is a crucial element in all external correspondence generated by SAP. The author, an experienced ABAP programmer and SAPscript trainer, provides step-by-step guidance so readers can develop custom layout sets in support of client objectives. Progressive tutorials (basic to advanced) and real-world examples help SAP R/3 implementers achieve mastery of this essential area.

3.0 out of 5 stars sapscript, January 4, 2000
By chuck singleton (Chicago, Il) - See all my reviews
I bought the book as a reference. I found that it was little better than reading the online documentation. If you can get to the help then you don't need this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough detail, February 21, 2000
By A Customer
I found this easy to follow and feel it will be a good reference book. However, I need something with more depth. I purchased the book to create SAPscript forms out of ABAP reports which was easy to do. There is not enough information on how to further customize them based on particular criteria.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for ABAP programmers, less so on the SAPscript side, August 20, 1999
By A Customer
This is the only book on SAPscript. So someone should write a better one. There definitely is a demand for such a book. Using SAPscript often means using ABAP and this aspect is covered well. The actual SAPscript bit is elementary, not providing much more than the online documentation. In particular, I missed tips and tricks for designing more complex layouts, variably sized boxes, up- and downloading RTF documents and workarounds for unusually implemented features (bugs). This book is merely an introduction to SAPscript, nothing more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very concise, easy to understand
We are on a newer version of SAP, so I had to adapt some of the screen shots. It's easy to understand. The tutorials and code examples were helpful.

We are running version 4.5, which I believe is a newer version than that presented in the book. Few of the screen shots shown in the book match what is on our system. Read more
