In May and early June, many a roadside glows with a sweet-scented invader. A native of Eurasia, dame’s rocket long ago escaped from Victorian gardens and, finding the New World much to its liking, has spread so that hardly a shaded rural lane in town lacks its violet, pink or white blossoms.

Few complain about this weed, probably because dame’s rocket is not only beautiful to look at, but sweet to smell -- in the evening, anyway.

Victorians decided that since the flowers perfume the night, and not the day, dame’s rocket should symbolize deceit. The fact is, however, that this wild mustard is scented for survival. It’s sweet by night to attract the moths that it uses as pollinators. And since it has plenty of nectar with which to reward them, moths would find nothing deceitful in dame’s rocket.
