Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Corel's version of Linux aims to be as friendly as possible, so many of its new features will be particularly appealing to beginners. Corel Linux OS Starter Kit comes complete with Corel Linux and WordPerfect 8 on CD-ROM and provides all you need to know about installing and configuring this operating system.

The book warms up with a comparison of Linux, Windows, and Mac OS, and looks at the features that make this version stand out from the crowd. Corel Linux is designed to be easy to install, so the chapter on this is relatively short, though it's supported by screen shots and a troubleshooting section.

The main part of the book is divided into four easily digestible, well-structured sections--so you can skip many of the more technical areas and return when you feel ready. Once you have Corel Linux up and running, you're introduced to KDE (K Desktop Environment), Corel's File Manager, the Control Center, and Internet-connection setup. The third section examines directory structures, user accounts, and disk and file management, and serves up a healthy discussion of Corel's graphical-administration tools. Part 4 delves more deeply into system administration and covers shells, text editors, and hardware-related issues. You find out how to set up a TCP/IP network, plus you get overviews on DNS and Web services using Apache. Creating Web pages using WordPerfect rounds the lesson off. Appendices on kernel compilation and a compendium of shell commands provide the finale. --Dave Mitchell, Amazon.co.uk

4.0 out of 5 stars Leaves the manual in the dust, April 28, 2000
While the manual that comes with Corel Linux is superior to those of most other distribution, it really covers only the basics and presents Linux from within the KDE desktop. If you need more in-depth coverage this "Official Guide" will provide information that goes far beyond the KDE desktop: from the first steps all the way to advanced scripting. A look at the newsgroups, however, shows that despite automatic hardware detection some people need advice or trouble-shooting during installation. While this distribution is by far the easiest to install, some hardware (some graphics adapters and sound cards) may cause trouble. Installation troublshooting is the one area where this book could improve. The most frequent installation problems should have been covered in a more extensive way. Otherwise it as an excellent guide that will make your Linux experience a lot more fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for beginners, May 24, 2000
By TheGonz (Lima, Peru) - See all my reviews
Once I began to read the book I couldn't put it down. The book is well written. The way it explains each issue is excellent. This book is a good start to this alternative OS.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not have a bootable CD Rom, May 24, 2000
By Donald R. Gerue (Milford. CA) - See all my reviews
I bought the book thinking that there was at least a downloadable version of Corel Linux on it. The Cd only starts from a windows desktop. Not to useful when you have a clean hard disk. Also it will not start with the corel linux floppy. Not to helpful to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars For people who want a Graphical Interface to Linux
Pros:

Probably one of the best introduction books to a Linux OS currently in print. It also deals with Corel Linux, which is a lot easier to use than a Red Hat. Read more
