Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Many pundits believe that the real "volks-Internet" won't be Internet via TV, but rather the Internet presented on mobile phones and other handheld computing devices. Furthermore, Cisco Systems and other networking powerhouses are beginning to sell products for wireless office networks at prices not too far removed from those of wired products. Data Over Wireless Networks is a newcomer's guide to wireless telecommunications technologies, with an emphasis on wireless local area networks (LANs) not usually found in books that also cover telephony. The information is up-to-date and comprehensive for engineers, managers, and investors wanting an honest understanding of wireless data communications technologies and their capabilities.

Each chapter explains underlying conditions (e.g., protocols, physical phenomena, market conditions, regulatory requirements, or a combination of these) of the technology under discussion. You learn how protocols fit into the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, and flow charts and packet diagrams illustrate communications activity. The discussion gets readers oriented and enables them to search for deeper, more specialized material (though less technically oriented readers will probably find the packet diagrams intimidating). For further coverage of wireless communications technologies (among others) and their implications for businesses and consumers, read Steven Shepard's top-notch Telecommunications Convergence. --David Wall

Topics covered: Technologies for communicating data over the airwaves, including Analog Mobile Phone System (AMPS), Digital Advanced Mobile Phone System (D-AMPS), Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Bluetooth, and wireless local area networks (LANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN specification.

Product Description
A first look at the next generation of wireless networking technology and vendor-specific applications including Motorola and Cisco.

1.0 out of 5 stars a waste of money and time, August 10, 2001
By Ralph Langner (Hamburg, Germany) - See all my reviews
According to its subtitle, this book covers Bluetooth, WAP and wireless LANs. In reality, each of these topics is contained in one short chapter. The last chapter (on wireless LANs) begins with the sentence "No book titled Data over Wireless Networks would be complete without considering wireless local-area networks..." -- absolutely true! But why does the author then go to great lengths describing voice-related mobile phone technologies (AMPS, D-AMPS, GSM, CDMA are all covered in separate chapters)? Another 2 chapters describe local multipoint distribution service and multichannel multipoint distribution service, topics that I cannot relate to the subject of the book. If you expect, like me, the book having some kind of software focus (remember, DATA over wireless networks), you don't get your money's worth. The back cover states: "Transmit data over wireless networks and develop cutting-edge applications with this hands-on reference. ... you will learn how to implement the latest protocols including WAP and Bluetooth." Well, not with this book! I know that it's hard to earn money as an author. Mr. Held seemingly wants to escape misery by publishing as many books on "hot" topics as his word processor is capable of (allegedly he has published 40+ books on computers and data communication). -- There are many good books on wireless communication, but this one is one of the worst I've come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the right stuff for novice technology enthusiasts, January 9, 2001
By Suresh "reachsuri" (Sunnyvale, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This book is well written and interesting, provided you have some very basic knowledge about telecommunications and the jargon used. This book is good for you if you wanted one book which can describe all those wireless communications stuff and the latest emerging technologies in the field. For experts in the field this may not be so useful but if you are a novice to this field this book is a very safe bet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers just the right material., December 10, 2000
By A Customer
As the author states in his well-written preface "wireless communications" is the revolution that we've all been waiting for. The question for me as a network administrator for a medium size company was; How could I take advantage of the wireless revolution in my own enterprise network?

The author gives a convincing and well written discussion of the basics of wireless communication and an in-depth look at wireless LANs, WAP and covers just enough material on bluetooth as an emerging standard.

I have long appreciated Gil Held's clearly written articles in Network Magazine and I recommend this book.

My impression of the book is that it was rushed. The author seems to write "off the cuff." And it wasn't proof read very well, either. Read more
