5.0 out of 5 stars Great source of information, March 7, 2002
By Don Rhodes (Oro Valley, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have read several other popular books on Director, they seemed either very basic or had very heavy tilt to one particular area of Director.
Dave's book is a well balanced view of Director. It gives you a very solid foundation to build upon. Dave also covered several capabilities that were not even mentioned in other Director books.
If you can only buy one book on Director, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars PsychicParrot says "THUMBS UP!", July 18, 2002
By PsychicParrot (Nottingham UK) - See all my reviews
A fantastic book! There's so much in here, it should probably be in widescreen. There are some great examples of code and Dave guides you through coding with the highest degree of structure and logic. If you're starting out in Shockwave 3d, it may not be the best option since it is a 'wider' book that doesn't just focus on one particular topic. It does, however, have some excellent code to refer to and serves as a great reference book for the more advanced Lingo-ist. The source files are up on Dave's site and they are all downloadable and very useful to have on your hard drive.

Whilst the book covers a wide range of topics and acts as a fantastic resource for the advanced programmer, there is still enough here for the beginner to get going. If you are just starting out with Director, buy this book and the Visual Quickstart Guide for Director and you'd have everything you need to be a Shockwave programmer. If you have been around a while, buy this book for reference and some REALLY helpful Lingo tips.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that great, April 27, 2004
By A Customer
This book is extremely thin on the ground, and won't teach you anything particularly useful. I first bought this book around two years ago when I first started developing in Director professionaly. I used it for about two weeks, decided it was nothing like as detailed as I needed and ditched it. Now I use Catanese's book, the native Director help function, and the Dir-3D mailing list (which is a fantastic resource). (David Mennenoh himself is a member of this list and posts questions with surprising regularity)

Not very much 3D content. But none of Dir-books are dedicated to 3D, and that would be somthing what I need.. Otherwise quite good and easy to follow.
