Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a convenient and handy reference to the species and subspecies of the world's birds, its chief virtue being it is the only single volume world list to include subspecies."
--ZOOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY

Product Description

This book represents a complete revision of the authors' previous authoritative work. It incorporates all the significant changes to bird taxonomy that have occurred over the past six years and remains the only single-volume work to list subspecies. Ornithologists are constantly reviewing and revising the scientific and common names of the world's birds--combining and dividing established species and genera. Despite the fact that opinions will continue to vary on the details of avian classification, lists such as this provide a baseline reference to scientific and English names, taxonomy, and distribution for both the professional and amateur ornithologist and taxonomist. In the next decade, new studies using advanced groupings may establish new systematic groupings. The current list, by adding to and amending the classic listing of Peters and his successors, may well be the last and most finely developed list in the traditional mold and, therefore, a prime reference for years to come.

Key Features
* The most up to date list of the world's birds
* Covers their distribution using traditional taxonomy
* The only single-volume reference to include subspecies
* Lists approximately 9,200 species and their subspecies
* Thoroughly revised and updated

4.0 out of 5 stars Howard & Moore's Checklist of the Birds of the World, December 15, 2000
By Robert G. Black (Lafayette, California USA) - See all my reviews
This is the first checklist since James L. Peters checklist was completed by ornithologists after his death that includes the names of avian subspecies known at the time of printing. Though the name alone is entered, with no credits or source listed, this is still the only volume that brings the lists of avian species and subspecies current through the mid-1990's. Howard & Moore's checklist is a valuable reference tool for any student with the need for a reasonably current listing of avian species and subspecies. The index is excellent and complete for all genera and species, but it does not index the subspecies. This is the only reason for the book's 4-star rating, rather than the 5-star rating it would otherwise deserve.
