Product Description

Reflecting the recent completion of LTE's specification, the new edition of this bestseller has been fully updated to provide a complete picture of the LTE system. The latest LTE standards are included on the radio interface architecture, the physical layer, access procedures, MBMS, together with three brand new chapters on LTE Transmission Procedures, Flexible Bandwidth in LTE and LTE evolution into IMT-Advanced.

Key technologies presented include multi-carrier transmission, advanced single-carrier transmission, advanced receivers, OFDM, MIMO and adaptive antenna solutions, advanced radio resource management and protocols, and different radio network architectures. Their role and use in the context of mobile broadband access in general is explained. Both a high-level overview and more detailed step-by-step explanations of HSPA and LTE implementation are given. An overview of other related systems such as TD SCDMA, CDMA2000, and WiMAX is also provided.

The new edition has up-to-date coverage of the recently published LTE Release 8 radio-access standard, giving the reader insight into the ongoing and future process of LTE and LTE-Advanced standardisation.

Coverage on LTE in this edition includes ( total of 270 pages on LTE):

  • Easy-to-access overview of the LTE protocol layers

  • Complete description of LTE physical layer including reference signals, control signalling, multi-antenna transmission schemes

  • Covers both FDD and TDD, their fundamental difference and their impact on the LTE design

  • Detailed description of access procedures including cell search, random access, broadcast of system information

  • Transmission procedures, including retransmission protocols, scheduling, uplink power control

  • Evolution towards IMT-Advanced ("4G")

"Reading a specification requires some effort. After reading the spec, you would know WHAT to transmit, but not WHY and HOW. This is where our book becomes important. Not only does it provide an easy-to-read description of the signals, procedures, and mechanisms in LTE, it also tells you WHY a certain signal, channel or procedure is present and HOW it is used. After reading the book, you will have a good understanding on how LTE works and why it is designed the way it is." - the authors

The authors of the book all work at Ericsson Research and are deeply involved in 3G development and standardisation since the early days of 3G research. They are leading experts in the field and are today still actively contributing to the standardisation of both HSPA and LTE within 3GPP. This includes details of the standards and technologies (160 new pages): LTE radio interface architecture, LTE physical layer and LTE access procedures.

  • Includes details of the standards and technologies (160 new pages): LTE radio interface architecture, LTE physical layer and LTE access procedures

  • Contains three brand new chapters on LTE: Transmission Procedures, Flexible Bandwidth and LTE Evolution and expanded details on the physical layer (total LTE content is 270 pages)

  • Examines the latest developments in the evolution of LTE into IMT-Advanced, the next stage of 3G Evolution

  • Gives clear explanations of the role of OFDM and MIMO technologies in HSPA and LTE

  • Outlines the System Architecture Evolution (SAE) supporting LTE and HSPA evolution

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one I was looking for ^^, January 26, 2009
As an implementation engineer, I needed to understand in detail each and every aspect of LTE specification. My job is to design the network stack of LTE (both base station and mobile station). When I started reading 3GPP LTE specification(36 series) 4 months ago, I found several sore concepts sticking out. Then I read the first edition of this book and found several concepts cleared. However the first edition had very few pages on LTE and focused more on WCDMA.

Then came this edition. I ordered this book from Amazon and it came within 2 weeks. This book makes understanding of LTE very easy. For instance I had several doubts in the RLC spec of 3gpp. Then I read the RLC content of this book and got all my doubts cleared.

The best thing about this book is that unlike other books, the contents of this book are not directly picked up from specification. It seems the authors of the book have a good grasp of what they are writing and have spent enough time to make it easy to read. Language is very succint. Each line makes sense, is relevant and helps increase understanding of LTE.

Overall this is probably the best book for LTE(and I have read several books). The book has been written in a fluid way and the flow of thought is connected. I have still not read the book completely, but I find myself going to the book again and again(in my free time or bedtime) just because it is a pleasant read.

Cons: At $120 I could not buy the book myself and had to ask my employer to purchase it. I wish they reasonably price it so that I can get a personal copy(and be able to underline several important things).

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a clear, informative book on new wireless technologies, October 31, 2008
By Gattofriulano (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
It is very difficult to find technical books that are rigorous and yet concise, clear - in other words written keeping the reader in mind and what he may be looking for. This book does exactly this - as you go through the book it provides excellent guidance in understanding the key drivers behind the new technologies, what the key strengths are, and what are the main paths in the evolution of technologies.

The book is well written, concise and consistent. It has none of those filler chapters on applications, on regulation, or on devices, that many books that focus on the network architecture often have.

Highly recommended for those out there trying to make sense of HSPA and LTE.

(There are some references to WiMAX, but the authors still talk about fixed WiMAX [16d] in the future tense, even though products have been available for several years now - but they are overall fair to WiMAX even though they belong to the HSPA/LTE camp)

    4.0 out of 5 stars LTE is considered 4G!, October 19, 2009
I used this book extensively in a previous job and found it to be excellent. We were using it for understanding LTE (Long Term Evolution) which is considered the next generation of cellular wireless technology. The book covers the architecture of LTE systems from the WCDMA evolution standpoint and throws light on how the SAE looks like. It is a very good starting point for LTE for people with prior knowledge of 3G systems. It covers the protocol in great detail and will benefit stack developers greatly.
I wanted to point out to a different reviewer of the book that LTE is 4G. He may be confused thinking only WiMax is fourth generation wireless technology while in fact LTE is the real descendant to the term. WiMax is also considered 4G in some circles but the pure cellular evolution of 3G is LTE and hence it is labeled as 4G.
For people interested in a more architectural level overview of LTE, I would recommend the following book:[...]
