Editorial Reviews

Review
"...this outstanding text deserves nothing but praise...The editors have brought together 57 authors, all of whom are at the very least extremely knowledgeable in their field, and, at best, are the unquestioned leaders... There is no topic related to biomaterials that is not covered somewhere in this book... The quality of the writing, the arrangement of information and the figures are all outstanding."
--POLYMER NEWS -- Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
"The new, expanded edition of Biomaterials Science provides a comprehensive coverage of this growing, multidisciplinary field for students of all backgrounds...The challenge to editors of a textbook of this nature is to encompass the traditional components alongside the new concepts and, indeed, to ensure that these different parts merge into one coherent story. In general, this has been done extremely well...if it has been the editors' objective to provide such a breadth of opinion, they have to be congratulated most sincerely, for the structure and composition of the text, which has 78 individual contributions, several appendices, and over 800 pages, is excellent and comprehensive...This book will undoubtedly fill a huge gap in the provision of authoritative texts in medical engineering. It is commended to all teachers of biomaterials science in whatever branch and clinical application they are engaged in. Indeed, it is the only such text that currently covers this area comprehensively. - Materials Today, Feb. 2005, David F. Williams, head of Department of Clinical Engineering at the University of Liverpool, UK

"The most thorough textbook available, covering most aspects of biomaterials science . provides the most up-to-date and in-depth information on biomaterial developments."

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail, June 15, 2005
By Anusha Gururajan "Biomedical Engineer" (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.

It is definetely the best reference you can find for biomaterials, but if this is your main textbook, it might be a little hard for beginners with no background in material science to understand the concept right away. I was personally surprised to see that biomaterials is such an extensively branch in biomedical engineering and there is lot of scope. I think this book will help you realize that!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A dry read, but very informative, October 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Biomaterials Science (Paperback)
It was a dry read, but it was chock full of information on biomaterials. It made me proud to be a biomedical engineering student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for beginners and advanced students, March 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Biomaterials Science (Paperback)
This is a well written book with something for just about everyone. There are parts geared directly to engineers, but issues like foreign body response are dealt with rigorously enough for the best bio geek. All classes of implantable devices are covered with a healthy dose of history to boot!

This is a great text that sums up the body's response to biomaterials. It has good introductory sections to materials science issues, tissue engineering, and immunology.
