Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This revised edition of John Griffiths Pedley's 1993 survey covers 3,000 years of Greek history with nearly 400 illustrations and an authoritative text that centers on material culture, especially pottery, statuary, and architecture. Greek Art and Archaeology incorporates recent scholarship on matters such as influences from the Near East and the spread of Greek ideas to other parts of the Mediterranean. Of special interest is Pedley's building-by-building history of the Parthenon, including a useful survey of its metopes and friezes. He also offers well-considered stylistic notes on familiar objects, such as the Laocoön group and the Nike of Samothrace. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
This useful, scholarly, and well-organized text examines Greek art in an archaeological context, organizing artifacts from c.3000 to 30 B.C. both chronologically and by medium. While the writing is occasionally a bit dry, a common problem for texts attempting to cover such a vast subject, it is fairly accessible. Pedley (classical archaeology and Greek, Univ. of Michigan) does not simply rehash material covered in other texts; he includes information gathered from recent archaeological findings. Most of the numerous illustrations are standard black-and-white archival photographs, but the sketches, maps, and plans are particularly well done and very useful for a clear understanding of the objects and areas depicted. The glossary, chronology, index, and bibliography are excellent. For the undergraduate student or independent learner. --Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P. L. , Pittsburgh
