4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for everyday practitioners, August 30, 2005
By Marc Bacon (Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was used as a text in Quantitative Methods for an online MBA. The book does a very good job of explaining statistical terms, provides lots of good examples, case studies, and worked problems.

It is strongly supported by Prentice-Hall's website. The companion Excel add-in, PhStat, is a very useful tool, so useful in fact that it alone is worth the purchase price. Databases are predesigned for text problems to illustrate specifica applications.

This is a textbook, not an "Idiot's Guide" to statistics. It does what it is intended to do very well, providing a great background for managers who will use statistics in their work.

The only caveat I would add is that due to the interactive nature of the book with the software, its contents would be difficult to digest for people who don't want to take the time to work out examples.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great statistics resource, May 1, 2007
I purchased this book as a requirement for my statistics class in the MBA program a few years ago. The textbook does not provide lengthy explanations or theories behind the methods but does provide excellent examples and solves problems showing each step. In addition to the book, the accompanying PhStat Excel add-in is excellent and very easy to use. The Excel add-in is also very handy should you need statistics in `real-life' (must better than whipping out a book). These two elements combined with an excellent teacher can be very effective. As with any statistics book, if you are not mathematically inclined, this book may seem difficult to understand.

This book was not written by statistitions, rather by math teachers. Concepts are hard to grasp and the material is very dry.
