Product Description

This introduction to abnormal psychology is designed to make the material more accessible and inviting to a new generation in a changing world. Noteworthy for its clear and engaging writing style that is accessible to readers, superior pedagogy, many engaging case examples and user-oriented applications, and integration of sociocultural material throughout. The authors adopt an interactionist approach in viewing abnormal behavior in terms of a complex interplay of factors representing psychological, biological, and sociocultural domains. Features personal accounts spanning a wide range of disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, autism, panic disorder, and other mental health problems. The free CD-ROM offers fifteen new segments from the “Speaking Out” series, including interviews with persons who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anorexia, bulimia, PTSD, alcoholism, schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, social phobia, hypochondriasis, and personality disorders. Highlights controversial issues in the field (e.g., Recovered Memory Controversy, EMDR: A Fad or a Find), and applications (e.g., How To Cope with a Panic Attack; Suicide Prevention; Rape Prevention; and Anger Management). A comprehensive reference for professionals in the psychology and/or medical fields.

From the Publisher
The Third Edition retains the strengths of the first two editions: a clear and engaging writing style that is accessible to students but does not compromise rigor; research-based and comprehensive in coverage; superior pedagogy; many illustrative, engaging case examples and student-oriented applications; and integration of sociocultural material throughout, including attention to cultural diversity, gender and lifestyle. Multicultural material is highlighted in boxed features ("Focus on Diversity") and integrated within the text in sections on sociocultural perspectives The attention to issues of diversity in abnormal psychology is clearly consistent with the importance given to cultural sensitivity in the DSM-IV and the need to bring these important issues to the attention of the beginning student in abnormal psychology. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Information about product unclear, January 22, 2007
I also received the CRAM101 study guide that just contained definitions for terms. Not useful at all. I should have went with my gut feeling after reading the other reviews and not ordered this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World, March 1, 2009
I found the book to be overall comprehensive, well-structured, and well-written. It is a good, concise source of information even for those not yet too advanced in psychology like myself. Examples of case scenarios are usually provided and supplement otherwise factual information thoroughly.
