Editorial Reviews
The publisher, Prentice-Hall ECS Professional
Written by three administrators at Sun, this book fills the gap by answering all the questions concerning real-world, day-to-day systems administration issues glossed over in the Solaris documentation by giving hints, tips, and techniques as well. KEY TOPICS: Covers differences between Solaris 1.x and 2.x environments, planning and preparing for installation (with examples), boot and shutdown files, the Admintool GUI, network topology, security, software management, disk utilities, Solaris Products (Wabi™) and Online: Backup™. Includes AutoInstall samples, sample disk configurations, and excerpts from the comp.unix.solaris FAQ.

From the Inside Flap
As with all documentation, there is a large hole between the steps necessary to install and support a generic Solaris environment and the real world of day-to-day systems administration. This book attempts to bridge the gap. It is not intended as a basic guide nor should it be used in place of the standard documentation, but it should be consulted by System Administrators who need more information.

How This Book Is Organized

Chapter 1, "An Introduction to Solaris," describes the most notable differences between the Solaris 1.x and 2.x environments.
Chapter 2, "Planning and Preparing for Installation," details the planning involved in setting up a Solaris 2.x installation and automating the installation process.
Chapter 3, "Installing Solaris," provides the reader with a few sample installations.
Chapter 4, "Admintool," details the ways in which to use the new admintool GUI and shows the longer manual processes to accomplish some of the same tasks.
Chapter 5, "Boot and Shutdown Files," describes some of the files consulted during the booting of a system and reviews changes that can be made to them.
Chapter 6, "Using the Network," discusses network topology and the different ways to use the Solaris environment on server systems.
Chapter 7, "Security," describes the theory of maintaining security and how to implement it in the Solaris 2.x environment.
Chapter 8, "Software Management," describes both the GUI and the command line-based tools for managing SVR4-standard software packages and patches for the operating system.
Chapter 9, "Disk Utilities," presents the standard Solaris 2.x utilities that are available for managing your disks and related common archiving procedures.
Chapter 10, "Solaris 2.x Products," describes the Wabi and Online: Backup products that are currently available for the Solaris 2.x environment.
Appendix A, "AutoInstall Samples," contains samples of actual AutoInstall scripts used at Sun.
Appendix B, "Sample Disk Configurations," contains examples of disk partitioning schemes and suggested sizes for the partitions.
Appendix C, "Sources of Information," contains excerpts from the comp.unix.solaris FAQ.
